The UCAM leads a European project to promote healthy aging

A team of researchers from six universities will study 2,500 people between 50 and 80 years of age during two years, and will establish and disseminate healthy life habits in order to prevent sarcopenia, osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol or some types of Cancer.

"Promoting the shift sedentary Lifestyle towards Active Aging" "LifeAge" is an Erasmus + Sport project in which sports physical educators, nutritionists, doctors and audiovisual communication professionals from the Catholic universities of Murcia and Cádiz (Spain) will participate, Foro Italico (Italy), Lapin (Finland), Latvia (Latvia) and Limerick (Ireland).

"We will conduct a physical and psychosocial assessment to 2,500 people from different parts of Europe to determine the health status of this population and to prevent or prevent the occurrence of diseases arising from a sedentary lifestyle through an educational intervention with exercise physical, "says Dr. Pablo Jorge Marcos-Pardo, professor of the Degree in Science of Physical Activity and Sports and principal investigator and coordinator of the project.

The research team will perform an examination to the selected population through tests of physical condition (strength, endurance, flexibility), balance, body composition, functional assessment and nutritional health questionnaires, sociodemographic, motivational, psychological and quality of life, among others. .

Subsequently, different training actions will be started, such as a prescription guide for the exercise and motivation aimed at adults and seniors, a mobile app for assessment and prescription of exercise, a comic aimed at children to teach them how to age with health, a promotional video about active aging, as well as different training seminars, scientific articles indexed in JCR or the final event of the project, which will take place in the UCAM on 10 and 11 December 2020, and which will be attended by professionals from different countries.

Only 20% of people over 65 years of age practice physical activity, and many of them do not do it with enough frequency and intensity to cause a benefit in their health.

In recent years, the Survey of Sports Habits of the Spanish population, shows revealing data that only 20% of the Spanish population over 65 years of age practices physical activity on a regular basis, and only 10% in the case of those over 75 years old.

In addition, a large volume of these does not usually do so often and intensely enough to provoke physical, psychological and social adaptations and, consequently, benefits for comprehensive health.

This is why the project, led by researchers in physical activity and sports science, emphasizes the need for practitioners to exercise the hand of a physical-sports educator, who is a professional, with training in the Degree in Science of Physical Activity and Sports, qualified to perform a complete physical-sporting assessment and design an exercise program adapted to your needs.

In this sense, the general objective of this project, financed with € 389,830.00 for the Erasmus + Sport program, is to assess the health consequences of aging and a sedentary lifestyle in the European population, and through various actions that will be developed in different countries, educate and promote physical activity, exercise and other healthy habits in people over 50 years.
