March 5, World Energy Efficiency Day (04/03/2019)

The `UCAM Eco Racing Team' will represent the Region of Murcia for the tenth consecutive year in the` Shell Eco Marathon Europe', a global competition for energy efficiency in electric cars between universities.

The ecological car was one of the first initiatives of the UCAM in its commitment to energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, and that the Murcian institution continues to implement new environmental care systems both inside and outside the classroom.

Through the Degree in Telecommunications Systems Engineering, different proposals are being developed, both teachers and researchers, to raise awareness, improve and reduce energy consumption through energy efficiency projects.

The `UCAM Eco Racing Team 'is just one example of the practices of the Catholic University in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility for the conservation of the environment.

After the good marks obtained during the last edition, this year, the Murcian team that has participated more times in the most important tournament in the world in the design of ecological cars and low energy consumption, will compete again to lower their brand, and travel more than 1501.35 km with the equivalent of 1 liter of gasoline.

As a novelty, the group of students and professors of the UCAM, will focus their innovations on electronics, raising the voltage, and with a more aerodynamic design that can be reflected in the body.

It is also worth noting the line of research that the University has initiated to detect the renewable resources that generate the greatest amount of energy for the Region of Murcia.

In this way, the UCAM supplies electricity and hot water to its facilities, with the installation of solar panels, a wind power plant and a geothermal well of great depth (100m), the first of its characteristics in the Region, which is why It deals with a unique infrastructure of deep geothermal energy.

In both projects, students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in subjects such as'Electronics and Energy'.

This year, in addition, they will have to prepare a guide of good practices in energy consumption and energy efficiency in one of the pavilions of the university itself, and that later aims to extrapolate the results obtained to the rest of the campus, in order to get a more sustainable campus.
