The machines enter the Old Prison in a few weeks (01/03/2019)

The Governing Board is putting out to tender the first phase of recovery of this space, with a budget of 2.1 million euros and a deadline of 12 months.

Rebeca Pérez stresses that it is a 'project without limits, open to Murcians, permeable and respectful' and reminds that the walls will be demolished to integrate the building in the city, which will have different uses, both social and cultural or recreational, and will open 24 hours

The machines will enter the old prison within a few weeks, once the Governing Board has approved today the tender for the first phase of the rehabilitation works, which have a budget of 2.1 million euros and a deadline of execution of 12 months.

The action foresees an intervention whose main differentiating element is 'the determined will to recover this space, closed and hermetic, in an attractive enclave for the city and attractive for its neighbors', explained Rebeca Perez, Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, responsible for this project, which will allow the rehabilitation of an area of 642 m 2 of the ground floor and 679 m 2 of the first.

To achieve this, the precondition will be the demolition of the walls and the incorporation of the prison patios to the urban layout, 'making it possible for an aggressive and hostile building, which now passes by, to be transformed into a building for the enjoyment of of all and completely permeable and open to the city, where the neighbors can walk, both perimetrally and through the existing courtyard, without architectural barriers.

In this way, the result of the project will be a space open to the city, permeable and respectful of the existing architecture, historical memory and environment.

"Our goal is to make this unique property a reference point for exhibitions, cultural activities, events and, ultimately, for the enjoyment of the residents of the municipality," explained Rebeca Pérez.

The proposal is basically to open the old prison to the urban fabric and connect it with it, seeking the recovery of the property and adjacent spaces, with a visual connection and real entry to the existing courtyards and the creation of permeable elements that replace the walls outer and inner perimeter, which will be demolished practically in its entirety -except the adjoining Correos-, keeping the watchtowers and part of the wall, while, the courtyards to the west and south, originally closed, will become linked and leveled squares the city

Spacious and friendly spaces

The objective is to open the jail space completely, linking it to the city, generating spacious and friendly spaces.

An integration consistent with the history of the site, rehabilitating elements of historical memory, but also reinterpreting spaces for new proposed uses.

The remodeling envisages generating public spaces organized by exempt nuclei located in the two buildings of the building, with an access with reception on the ground floor.

Currently, the right and left wing of the head building are separated by the patio and two terraces on the first floor.

The proposed intervention raises the connection of both wings through a glass module located on the rear facade of the building, so as not to change the perception of the main façade to Primo de Rivera Avenue.

The project to be executed, carried out by Manuel Hernández and José Ibáñez, of IH Architects, winners of the preliminary project competition organized by the City Council, constitutes one of the strategic actions of the city, together with Murcia Río, the intervention in the deposit of San Esteban and its surroundings and the pedestrianization of Alfonso X.
