The pedestrian gains 15,000 m2 in the center of Murcia with the start of the works of Phase II of Alfonso X Avenue (01/03/2019)

The works from Jaime I to La Circular will complete an axis of reference in the historic center of 50,000m2, from La Glorieta to La Circular, which will culminate with a modern and wide boulevard with areas of stay, green spaces and bike lanes.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the members of his government team visited today the start of the works of Phase II of Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue, an action that gives continuity to Phase I from Jaime I to La Circular and with which the center of the city will gain about 15,000m2 of pedestrian surface before the end of the year.

The mayor said that "these projects, along with the construction of new sidewalks in neighborhoods and districts and 37 km of new bike lanes that are being enabled in the municipality, represent the recovery of 145,000 m2 for Murcia, improving the quality of life of people".

5 football fields to explore on foot in the old town

Specifically, this Phase II covers an area of ​​8,217 m2 and 200 m in length, and involves the complete renovation of the pavement and the creation of a modern and uniform urban treatment space, completing the most important pedestrian itinerary of the city;

a reference axis that runs through La Glorieta, Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X until La Circular;

covering an area of ​​50,000 m2 (equivalent to 5 football fields).

The works that have begun today go beyond the simple paving of a street for pedestrianization, since an integral project has been developed that orders the entire road and gives continuity to the bike lane.

In addition, 40 orange trees and 85 planters will be planted, 70 new low consumption Led luminaires, 20 litter bins, 16 banks and six underground containers will be installed.

The section of this Phase II will be maintained accessibility rolled to neighbors and services, taxis, distributions and public services, garbage collection and street cleaning, and respect the historical considerations of the environment, the urban landscape, urban ecology and vegetation and conditions of lighting.

Likewise, the project takes into account the sustainability, comfort and quality of this public space, both for residents and for the rest of the citizens who daily use the central spaces of the boulevard.

The crossing of Jaime I will be maintained for motor vehicles.

This work, promoted by the Department of Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, has a budget of 2,198,542 euros and an implementation period of 8 months.

The first phase was opened to citizens on October 27.

95% less traffic

After the pedestrianization of the stretch between Santo Domingo and Jaime I there has been a reduction of 95% of traffic compared to that circulating before the work, to the point that the vehicles that passed through this avenue in an hour are the same as currently They travel this road all day long.

The project foresees a compatibility between pedestrian traffic with access to neighbors and services, not only in Alfonso X, but also to Santa Clara streets to Gran Vía and Enrique Villar to the University.

In parallel, but segregated and signposted, a two-way bike lane runs through the entire ride.

In the perimeter streets to the performance, Plaza Preciosa, Jaime I and Gutiérrez Mellado is resolved the placement of garbage containers, taxi stops and loading and unloading areas.

Access to restricted traffic will be made through vertical information prior to the turn to Alfonso X and the placement of a license plate recognition camera that will be controlled from the Traffic Hall of the City of Murcia.
