The DNA revolution reaches all the squares and gardens of El Carmen, with 1,500 actions and the social activation of the neighbors (27/02/2019)

The participation of more than fifty groups and associations has been key to determine the priorities of the neighborhood, the most populated area of Murcia with 23,000 inhabitants.

More than 300 technicians start cleaning and removing graffiti, planting trees, improving playgrounds and gymnastics for adults, installing fountains, new benches and rest areas, improving road safety, accessibility, and illumination.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by members of the municipal Corporation, attended today the start of the Agitation Phase of the ADN-El Carmen project, a revolutionary initiative that has the direct participation of the neighbors and the collaboration of more than 50 associations and social groups in the neighborhood.

"Today begins to materialize in El Carmen a project that began to take shape nine months ago;

a period in which dozens of participatory assemblies have taken place, hundreds of urban mappings and numerous projects of social, cultural, commercial and educational interest have been proposed, "said José Ballesta, who reported that" the neighbors themselves have put us on the table a total of 1,500 improvement actions in the entire neighborhood, which will take speed over these coming weeks, thanks to an injection of 2 million euros. "

The participation of the neighbors has been key to determine the priorities of the neighborhood according to the ADN model, which has been recognized as one of the best practices of public intervention in urban environments of the European Union.

"After these months of work we can say that the social fabric of the neighborhood is more active than ever, that the associations know and work with each other, that they are related to public spaces and that we are achieving great results," said José Ballesta.

Some 300 municipal workers have begun today to work in the environment of Pintor Pedro Flores and will intervene in each and every one of the squares and gardens of what is considered the most authentic neighborhood of Murcia, the most populated city with more of 23,000 inhabitants and popularly known as 'El Barrio' because it was the first expansion of the capital.

El Carmen thus becomes the second neighborhood to benefit from the DNA methodology, after the intervention carried out in Santa Eulalia, which had a majority social support and was a substantial improvement in the public spaces known as the artists' neighborhood.

Depth cleaning, sources, lighting and security

The projects include the planting of new trees, thorough cleaning of the neighborhood (with a total of 68 workers and 28 vehicles and cleaning machinery) and removal of graffiti, improvement of playgrounds, gerontogimnasia spaces for the elderly, installation from sources, new banks and rest areas, improvement of road safety, accessibility, lighting (462 new LED luminaires and special lighting project on Álvarez Quintero street), etc.

As regards road safety, five streets will be asphalted, the improvement and repainting of horizontal signage will be made, and the opening of General Martín de la Carrera street with Torre de Romo, following the recent demolition of an old building that allows to open the space on both sides, as requested by neighbors.

Employment and Training

The creation of jobs is another aspect that will address the City Council in the neighborhood.

This coming Friday the approval of the Employment and Training project for the residents of El Carmen, La Fama and La Paz is expected in the Governing Board.

Through this initiative, 300 neighbors will receive orientation to develop their professional itinerary.

In addition, 75 of them will be selected for training in garden maintenance, carpentry, painting, cleaning exterior spaces and locksmithing, whose professional practices will later impact the neighborhood.

During these weeks of Agitation, in addition to the urban improvements, the neighborhood will witness important events and projects such as the Employment Fair, which will be held on April 4 or the Huerta Week, which will have as one of its main stages the Carmen neighborhood.

Objective: Southern Connection

For the El Carmen neighborhood, the ADN initiative is just the beginning of a large-scale global transformation project, such as the 'Southern Connection' project, which will allow the centrality of neighborhoods and districts in the south to be restored, through of the suppression of the railroad track on the surface, earning more than 200,000m2 of public space, in which large pedestrian areas, a large avenue, gardens and green and sports areas will be built.

Together with Carmen, this project of social transformation, which will involve an investment of 40 million euros, will benefit the neighborhoods of San Pío X, Barriomar, Santiago el Mayor, El Progreso, El Infante and the hamlet of Patiño.

Life and culture in El Carmen

In addition, throughout the neighborhood of El Carmen, the City is making a battery of investments and large-scale projects:
