Somos Región demands the replacement of allergenic plants in streets, squares and gardens and forceful measures to curb pollution levels (26/02/2019)

José Antonio Álvarez: "We propose the replacement of allergenic plants, avoid the development of invasive plants and the promotion of low-polluting means of transport"

Early on Tuesday, the city of Murcia once again recorded higher values of pollution at the maximum recommended by the European directive, which stands at 50 micrograms per cubic meter, an overexposure that is increasingly frequent and causes a loss evident in the health of citizens, especially among children, the elderly and pregnant women.

In Somos Región, we believe that we can not get used to this situation, or belittle the problem.

For the mayoral candidate of Murcia, José Antonio Álvarez "we can not allow the air we all breathe to become something harmful to our health.

We must put in place as many measures as necessary to reverse this situation and we must do it as soon as possible. "

The excess of contamination, together with the effects of climate change, is also causing a disproportionate increase in cases of allergies to pollens, increasing their severity and the respiratory symptoms they produce.

As a result, the number of allergic people is increasing and the age of onset of symptoms is decreasing.

Pollutants such as NO2, NOx, suspended particles produced by petrol or diesel traffic and heating, in addition to industrial activity, give rise to cities full of allergies, where, paradoxically, we have fewer pollens and a higher prevalence than in rural areas where its inhabitants live surrounded by a greater concentration of pollen.

If we continue at this rate, some experts point out that in the year 2030, one in four Spaniards will be allergic with manifestations of their disease.

This higher concentration of pollen is due to the stress of trees and plants that have direct contact with pollutants such as those present in our streets, filtering air full of products of combustion.

Faced with this attack, plants increase levels of pollens and the load of proteins in them as a form of defense, which affects the immune system of people producing symptoms at younger and younger ages or worsening those cases already controlled and treated.

To avoid this situation, Álvarez proposes "to avoid plants known as easily estresables, such as banana trees with an enormous allergenic capacity, but present in cities for their beauty and resistance, cypresses or olive trees.

Avoid the development of invasive plants such as Salsola.

Study which are the best species and less allergenic and replace many of the current ones.

Plan combustion-free cities with the promotion of low-polluting media such as bicycles or electric vehicles, including public transport.

Replace combustion heaters with others with alternative energies such as solar in its various possibilities.

Or the pedestrianization and amabilization of great arteries, improving communication with the districts, turned into small cities contaminated by the intense traffic they support ".
