The first cyclist tour by the bike lanes of the neighborhoods of Murcia will benefit the Food Bank (26/02/2019)

It will take place on Saturday March 16, with a route of 8 kilometers that will start at the Malecón and will end at the Plaza de la Universidad, using the cycling infrastructures built by the City Council in recent months, which have been honored at the Bikefriendly Awards

Since 2015, a network of 21.5 km of cycle lanes has been created, mostly segregated, within the Murcia transformer project as a sustainable city, which is completed with another 15.8 km in execution and 6.7 km in drafting

Antonio Navarro: 'It is a magnificent opportunity to enjoy a walk through the heart of the city with the new cycling infrastructure that we have put in place and, at the same time, contribute with a solidary purpose'

The councilors of the City of Murcia Conchita Ruiz, Antonio Navarro and Felipe Coello, together with the President of the Food Bank, Bonifacio Fernández Núñez, accompanied by the vice president and secretary of the entity, José María Gavilán Ríos and José López Cerdán, respectively, presented today the solidary cycling tour through the network of cycle paths in the center of Murcia that will take place on Saturday, March 16, whose benefits will be used to finance the work of this non-profit association.

It is an opportunity to participate in a 'joyful and healthy activity, which will take place in a familiar and relaxed atmosphere', explained Councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, who encourages Murcia to 'turn around with an initiative solidarity that will take advantage of the new cycling infrastructure that we have launched '.

"We encourage all citizens to participate in this trip, as this way you can help Banco de Alimentos in the solidarity work done with people in need, breaking and overcoming many barriers," added the councilor of Sports and Health , Felipe Coello.

Double recognition at the Bikefriendly Awards

The councilor for Urban Planning, Environment, Water and Vegetable Garden, Antonio Navarro, stressed that "this itinerary is a sample of the new infrastructure that we have launched in recent years within the strategy for the promotion of cycling in Murcia."

A performance that has been distinguished in two categories by the Bikefriendly Awards, driven by the Network of Cities for the Bicycle.

On the one hand, with the 'Sprinter' second prize, which recognizes the merit of the effort carried out during the last two years to develop and implement measures to promote the use of the bike;

on the other, with the third place in the category that rewards the design and implementation of infrastructures and / or services necessary to ensure cycling through the city in a fast, safe, comfortable, coherent and intuitive manner.

The decided commitment of the City Council to promote the use of this means of transport in the city has been carried out working in three fundamental areas: participation;

training and education;

and development of bicycle infrastructures.

Regarding this last aspect, Navarro stressed 'what better way to symbolize the completion of these platforms reserved for bicycles that connect in the center of the city than to do it with a social initiative, neighborhood and deep sense of solidarity'.
