The Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesus Pacheco, presented this morning the Blessing of the Seed of the Silkworm, held another year by the Peña Huertana La Seda de La Alberca.

La Peña Huertana La Silda de La Alberca celebrates the 44th anniversary of the blessing of the silkworm seed, a tradition rooted in the significance of obtaining this fiber in Murcia, with cultural activities and its traditional pilgrimage.

This event will be held on Sunday, March 3, with a departure at 10 am from the Peña Huertana la Seda and Mass at the Convent of Santa Catalina del Monte at 12.30.

In this edition it will go through the facilities of the Sericícola Station, returning to the old route.

Previously, on Friday, March 1 will be inflatables, activities and games for children, plus a great chocolate with monkeys.

On Saturday 2 will be held the concert of the blessing of the seed with the performance of David Andreu.

As ambassador 2019 of the silk has been elected Miguel Lopez Abad, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Murcia, which replaces the position of the councilman of Traffic and Public Safety, Lola Sanchez, Ambassador of 2018.

The Blessing of the Seed of the Silkworm dates from the 19th century: in those years the Huertano longed for the arrival of the first days of March, to collect the seed that was kept in his barrack in order to bless it and get a great harvest in the campaign that was about to begin.

At that time the huertanos were united in a great pilgrimage towards the Santa Catalina del Monte, they passed through the Servicultural Station of La Alberca and picked up the Christ of Forgiveness, Pattern of the Torcedores and Weavers of the Silk, that was guarded there, for This way all together reach the chapel and celebrate a campaign mass, in which the blessing of the seed was proceeded.

The Peña Huertana La Seda, in 1975 and after many years of inactivity, picks up the tradition and proceeds to bless, year after year, the seed of the silkworm.

The blessing was celebrated for a few years in the Hermitage of San Antonio el Pobre because Santa Catalina del Monte was in very poor condition where it returned in 2006 once it was rehabilitated by the City Council.
