Murcia reaches a population of 447,207 inhabitants and consolidates itself as the seventh most populated city in the country (25/02/2019)

According to the official register on January 1, 2018, approved today by the Infrastructure, Finance and General Affairs Committee.

Since there are official records, the municipality of Murcia has not stopped gaining inhabitants any year.

The causes of the increase in population correspond, above all, with the almost 10,000 discharges registered by change of residence from other municipalities and the 4,500 registered births.

Murcia increased its population by 3,730 inhabitants in 2017, going from 443,477 to 447,207 as of January 1, 2018, according to the official registry that today has received the approval of the Infrastructure, Finance and General Affairs Committee and next Thursday it will be approved by the Plenary.

Since it has official records, the municipality of Murcia has not stopped gaining inhabitants any year and continues to occupy the seventh place in the most populated Spanish capitals, after Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza and Malaga.

With the data from this latest revision, which includes 228,588 women and 218,619 men, the increase in population has occurred because although there were 17,673 casualties, these were offset by 21,410 discharges.

Among the latter, the most significant causes of variation were the 9,828 caused by change of residence of people from other municipalities, 4,582 births and 4,477 by the incorporation of men and women who had residence abroad.

In addition, 2,429 were registered by default and 94 by rectification of sex.

On the contrary, the losses were mainly motivated by change to another municipality (8,710), by improper / duplicate registration (3,925), by death (3,277), by non-renewal (1,022), by change of residence abroad (645 ) and by rectification of sex (94).

On the other hand, the register includes 22,888 alterations by change of address within the municipality.

The variation registered has been uneven among neighborhoods and districts, so that while these have incorporated 3,561 residents, reaching 278,766 inhabitants -62.33% -, the city has added 169 people, and maintains a population of 168,441 people .

Five neighborhoods surpass the figure of 10,000 inhabitants: El Carmen, Vistalegre, Infante Juan Manuel, Santa María de Gracia and Espinardo.

Regarding the districts there are 7 that also exceed that figure.

They are El Palmar, Bacons Bridge, Cabezo de Torres, La Alberca, Sangonera La Verde, Beniaján and Santiago and Zaraíche.

At the other extreme are 7 other localities that do not reach a thousand inhabitants: Carrascoy-La Murta, Cañada Hermosa, Cañadas de San Pedro, Baños y Mendigo, Valladolises, Los Martínez del Puerto and Rincón de Beniscornia.

The revision of the census of inhabitants has been elaborated by the Service of Statistics and Notifications, dependent of the Department of Commerce and Institutional Relations, which Maruja Pelegrín directs.
