The Kings presented the National Research Prize to the UMU professor Pablo Artal (21/02/2019)

The professor of the University of Murcia Pablo Artal has received this Thursday the Juan de la Cierva National Research Award, in the area of ​​Technology Transfer.

The delivery of these national awards has taken place at the El Pardo Royal Palace and has been presided over by the Kings.

The physicist, researcher at the Optics faculty, was in charge of reading the speech of gratitude on behalf of all the winners.

Along with Artal, scientists Rafael Rebolo, Ramón López de Mántaras, Pedro Jordano and Luis Liz Marzán have also received a National Research Award.

Pablo Artal, in statements made before the award ceremony, wanted to share this important recognition with the University of Murcia and, especially, with the members of the Optics Laboratory, the research group that he launched thirty years ago and in the one that all their investigations have been developed.

The jury of the National Award granted the UMU professor this recognition, unanimously, "for his pioneering contributions in the use of innovative methods for the evaluation and correction of vision and its impact on ocular health. technology of very high level, recognized nationally and internationally. "

Among the long list of scientific merits that have been added for the award of the National Research Award 2018 include research that allowed to develop artificial lenses to correct cataracts.

These lenses, which mimic the characteristics of a young crystalline lens, have been used in operations around the world and millions of people have improved their vision thanks to them.

The design and development of instruments for measuring and diagnosing vision problems is another of the successful fields of work that Artal has led from the UMU Optics Laboratory, where nearly three thousand machines have been used throughout. the world.

Among his most recent researches are the works to create a lens that counteracts problems of macular degeneration;

as well as his multiple works in basic research to know the functioning of the human eye.

The rector of the University, José Luján, has accompanied Artal in this act.

Luján believes that "this award is the recognition of an entire professional career dedicated to the research and transfer of knowledge, to a scientific and technological trajectory that contributes to progress in the evaluation and correction of vision and eye health." As representatives of the University of Murcia have also attended the event the Vice Chancellor for Research, Francisco Esquembre;

Artal, in addition, has been accompanied by members of the Optics Laboratory of the UMU.

Specifically, Eloy Ángel Villegas, dean of the faculty of Optics, and Pedro Prieto, vice-dean of Optical Academic Planning attended.

Professors such as José Manuel López Nicolás, coordinator of Scientific Culture of the UMU, and Miguel Ortuño, of the Department of Physics, have also been part of the delegation of the UMU.
