The University of Murcia distributes condoms among the students on the European Day of Sexual and Reproductive Health (14/02/2019)

February 14 is not only celebrated on Valentine's Day, the romantic date is also the commemoration of the European Day of Sexual and Reproductive Health.

With this motive, the University of Murcia, along with other 16 universities belonging to the Spanish Network of Healthy Universities (REUS), has organized a day to sensitize, raise awareness and inform the university community of the importance of responsible sexual health as a means of prevention, as well as the importance of the use of condoms as the only double barrier protection method against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

From the first hour of the morning, condoms have been distributed and sexual health information has been disseminated to the students who have passed through the installed volunteer position of the University Social Center, in the Espinardo Campus.

This initiative of CONTROL and the REUS is even more important if we take into account that, in the middle of 2019, the disinformation among young people regarding sexual health and STIs is still striking.

At least, this is clear from the data of seventh barometer 'Youth and sex' prepared by CONTROL, according to which 68.3% of young Spaniards say that there is not enough information in this area.

Another striking fact in terms of awareness is that 77.9% of young people do not know the sexual health status of their partner or that 12.9% confess to continue using the 'reverse gear' as a method of prevention.

However, this method does not prevent pregnancy or the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

Regardless of whether or not you can have knowledge of the sexual health status of the couple, the condom is presented as the only double barrier protection method and the best ally for a safe, fun and responsible sexual relationship.

Although this seems to be perceptible among young people, there is still a need to raise awareness about the importance of its use, since 31.2% recognize using condoms only occasionally.

The Spanish Network of Healthy Universities (REUS) has been working for more than 10 years on a project of health promoting universities aimed at the university community, as well as promoting and promoting joint work among public health agencies, community institutions and universities.

The universities adhered this year to the initiative are the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Universitat Jaume I, Rey Juan Carlos University, University of Huelva, University of Extremadura, University of La Rioja, University of Burgos, University of Granada, University of Malaga, University of Murcia, Miguel Hernández University of Elche, University of Lleida, University of La Laguna, University of Jaén, University of Isabel I and University of the Balearic Islands.
