The University of Murcia turns to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (07/02/2019)

Under the name 'What does women do in science?'

the Unit of Scientific Culture (UCC) of the University of Murcia (UMU) devotes a full morning to highlight the role of the researchers of the institution.

The event will take place on February 11, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, at 9:30 am in the Hall of Degrees of the Faculty of Communication and Documentation.

Admission will be free until all seats.

Through lectures by experts the attendees will know different areas of knowledge that will culminate with a round table.

Delfina Roca Marín, professor at the School of Communication and Documentation at the UMU and responsible for communication at the UCC, will moderate the final colloquium where experiences and ideas about the position of women in the scientific world will be shared.

Also, the inauguration will be in charge of the coordinator of the Scientific Culture Unit, José Manuel López Nicolás;

the vice-rector of Students, Mª Cristina Sánchez López;

the Vice Chancellor for Employment, Entrepreneurship and Society, Alicia Rubio Bañón;

and the director of the Unit for Equality, Carmen Sánchez Trigueros.

The initiative joins the movement of February 11 that seeks to give visibility to the researchers, empower women in the scientific field, break the gender gap and promote the vocation in girls. After the event, from 14: 00 hours, those women who wish may join an informal lunch in the Faculty of Economics and Business.

Those responsible for the presentations will be the following researchers and teachers of the UMU: Pilar Almansa (honorary teacher), specialist in female genital mutilation, Susana Martínez (Faculty of Economics) analyst of the presence of women in the business fabric in historical perspective; Emma Martínez (Area of ​​Toxicology) that addresses issues of Environmental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology, Pilar Garrido (Faculty of Arts), expert in Arabic and Islamic Studies, María José Ortín (School of Informatics), Software Engineering, Asunción Morte, Professor at the Faculty of Biology and researcher in the area of ​​Botany.

Likewise, we will also have Noelia Sánchez, PhD student in History, Geography and History of Art: Society, Territory and Heritage, whose work deals with Paleolithic and lithic tools, especially hunting;

and Elena Garrido, a graduate in Journalism, who has focused her career on forgotten Spanish women from the Residencia de Señoritas: 'las Sincátedra'.
