Gender violence focuses the interuniversity debate tournament organized by the UMU and the Regional Assembly (07/02/2019)

The University of Murcia and the Regional Assembly of Murcia organize this Friday, February 8, the 'V National Interuniversity Parliamentary Debate UMAR', which will take place in the plenary hall of the Regional Assembly of Murcia (Cartagena), at 10 hours.

The debate, which in this edition will focus on gender violence, will host different champions of debate tournaments both in Spain and worldwide, such as the Galician Aida Gonzalez, winner of the 'University World Championship of debate in Spanish 2016' and best speaker of the world 2017. The teams will be formed by students from the University of Murcia, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Compostela Debate Club-Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Galician Debate Association.

The dynamics of the tournament establishes that the participants will not know the specific motion to debate until fifteen minutes before starting, since it is an exercise in improvisation, rhetoric and argumentation.

They will have to prepare a debate that will simulate the English parliamentary activity, in which they will propose and criticize a concrete proposal on gender violence.

The event was organized by Luis Gálvez, professor of Constitutional Law and director of the UMU Debate Room, and Francisco Javier Torres, president of the UMU Debate Club.

Both have stressed that there is no better place than the parliament to carry out a debate of these characteristics, since it is the nerve center of the political decisions and the life of the citizens of Murcia.

VI Debate Tournament BP Ciudad de Murcia

On the other hand, the Debate Club of the University of Murcia, in collaboration with the City of Murcia, has organized the 'VI City of Murcia BP Debate Tournament', which will take place on 8, 9 and 10 February.

The more than 30 participating teams and judges will arrive on Friday, February 8, the day on which the opening of the tournament will take place in the law room of the Faculty of Law.

The main competition rounds will be held throughout Saturday in the classrooms of La Merced, and on Sunday the semifinal will take place in the Moneo building and the grand final in the Archaeological Museum of Murcia (MAM).

The head of the award team, which is in charge of proposing the topics of debate and coordinating the judges, will be the Galician Carlota Noguerol, recognized Spanish debater.

In this work will be accompanied, among others, by Aida González, best speaker of the world 2017;

Carmen Vallecillo, world champion of debate 2018;

and Sergio Melero, Murcia lawyer and runner-up of debate 2015.
