The urban bus fleet in Murcia becomes the first in Spain to be accessible through a novel system for the visually impaired (06/02/2019)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Finance, Contracting and Urban Mobility, Eduardo Martínez-Oliva, and the Councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, and the young computer scientist of Navilens, Pedro Esquiva , has presented today a novel system of digital markers that allows people with visual disabilities to locate the stop autonomously and receive locutada information about the times of passage of the next buses in those stops only using their mobile device.

The act was also attended by Teresa Lajarín, president of the Territorial Council of ONCE;

María Inmaculada Carrillo, vice president of the Council;

Pedro Martínez, president of CERMI Región de Murcia;

José Enrique Pérez, Transport Manager of Murcia;

and Nuria Fructuoso, from the company Navilens.

Thus, Murcia's urban bus fleet, managed by Transportes de Murcia, becomes the first in Spain to be accessible through the Navilens system.

This application will also benefit people without visual impairment since all buses and stops have these markers that allow any user who stops at the stop to know if that is the vehicle in which it should be mounted and what are its next destinations .

"It is our commitment to carry out a digital transformation in our city and today we are launching this digital solution committed to people that allows blind people to guide themselves independently and, to the rest of users, obtain reliable and accurate information from the step of the buses, "explained the mayor, who added that" this pioneering initiative is part of a much more ambitious and global plan, which is the Accessibility Plan of the municipality of Murcia, approved in the Plenary Session of the City Council with the support of the different groups, and led from the Department of Social Rights.

How does it work

Through color-coded signs similar to the barcodes or QR codes installed in the stops and buses, it is indicated, in an auditory way, which direction should go and what is the situation of the person with respect to the indicator sign.

Thus, people who use public transport can know immediately, simply and updated the times of passage of your bus, if there are special services or incidents in the service and what line to take to get to your destination.

This technology also eliminates language barriers since all this information will be offered in the language in which the user has configured their device, thus facilitating the use of public transportation to people with another native language other than Spanish.

To use this new system, two mobile applications have been designed: on the one hand, 'Navilens', which is intended for people with visual impairments as it logs the information, and 'ddtagsGO', for the rest of users.

NaviLens, a Murcian technological project, is a pioneering system of signage, with a universal character, that makes it easier for people with visual disabilities to orientate themselves simply with a slight movement of the hand in which they hold their smart mobile phone.

All urban transport in Murcia, accessible

With this initiative, all the urban transport of the municipality becomes accessible since last June Tram of Murcia launched this innovative system in the vehicles of its lines, being Murcia the first city in Spain to implement this system in the full line of the tram since Barcelona also has it, but only in specific sections.
