A new ordinance regulates the control of fire protection installations (02/02/2019)

The hydrant and dry column facilities of the municipality are for the exclusive use of firefighters, but the maintenance tasks correspond to third parties.

For this reason, the City Council has drawn up an ordinance in which the mandatory control mechanisms are established to guarantee that the Fire and Rescue Extinction Service can deal with emergencies.

On the one hand, it is intended to regulate the necessary mechanisms to carry out both the signaling of hydrants and dry column, in order to allow a quick and easy location by firefighters vehicles in their interventions.

And, on the other, it is necessary to have documentary knowledge that the dry column installations are maintained according to the norm, thus providing the absolute guarantee of being available for use in case of an emergency for fire services.

With the Municipal Ordinance on Hydrants and Dry Column, whose project has received this week the initial approval of the Plenary, the Fire and Rescue Extinction Service has proposed to comply with the safety precepts referred to in the Regulation of Facilities for protection against fires, adapt and update the existing facilities, and regulate how new facilities should do from the date.

Hydrants are elements that are located on public roads, either on the surface or buried, which are permanently connected to the water network and which constitute the main source of supply to refuel fire trucks in their interventions.

The dry column, arranged in certain singular buildings or high-rise, is a vertical pipe empty of water, which starts from a cupboard located in the main façade of the building and which serves as a connection so that, in case of urgency, the fire trucks and provide water to the aforementioned installation.
