The University of Murcia starts its great project ODSesiones to be the engine of social change (31/01/2019)

The University of Murcia presented Thursday the ODSesiones UMU project, the commitment of the institution for the fulfillment and development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) within the framework of the UN 2030 Agenda.

From now until April 2021 the University will dedicate a month to disseminate and raise awareness about each of these seventeen objectives, which correspond to major problems that the world society must solve.

The event took place in the faculty of Economics and Business, where a fair of exhibitors from many of the NGOs participating in the project has previously been organized so that attendees could become familiar with the initiative and learn more about the organizations of the third sector that have collaborated.

The seventeen Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, approved by the UN in September 2015, include the elimination of poverty, the fight against hunger, the fight against climate change, quality education, equality for women , the defense of the environment or the design of our cities.

Through the ODSesiones project, the University of Murcia acquires a firm commitment to the plan marked by the United Nations, by which each of these objectives must be fulfilled in the year 2030. To carry out this work, the University of Murcia is going to dedicate each month to an SDG, developing awareness and social impact activities in collaboration with experts, NGOs, companies and public institutions.

In addition, work is being carried out on curricular sustainability to include the SDGs in the curricula and the classrooms.

With a duration of more than two years that will run until April 2021, each month the activities will be focused on the faculties and centers that are most related to the subject.

The programming for the month of February will be dedicated to the 'ODS 1: End of Poverty', with more than forty activities that will focus, above all, on the Faculties of Social Work and Economy and Business.

These include talks, workshops, artistic projects, sporting events, solidarity fairs, visits to NGOs, environmental projects, etc.

Both the members of the university community and the rest of the citizens will be able to participate in the different activities that, in turn, will be recognized with sustainable prizes such as gym, tram or organic vegetable bonuses.

As explained by Longinos Marín-Rives, delegate of the Rector for Social Responsibility and Transparency and promoter of the project, the institution intends, "on the one hand, to sensitize the university community about the importance of the SDGs and, on the other, to develop projects of social impact and transformation in each one of the objectives ".

The commitment to the SDGs "is not only the responsibility of governments, but it is a commitment of all sectors of the population, which includes companies, public institutions and third sector organizations."

Representatives of all the agents involved have participated in the event, highlighting and thanking the role of the University of Murcia as a unifying agent of common forces and synergies;

something that precisely is specified in objective 17 of the United Nations.

The president of the CARM, Fernando López Miras, who has presided over the event, stressed that the University of Murcia once again sets an example in the Region, being a pioneer in an ambitious project that goes beyond the academic sphere.

On the other hand, Diego Conesa, delegate of the Government, has indicated that the Region of Murcia is one of the regions with the highest rate of inequality and risk of exclusion.

Therefore, "today is an important day for the Region of Murcia and its projection to the world," he added, highlighting the role of the University of Murcia as the driving force of that change.

The representative of the high commissioner of the Government of Spain for the 2030 Agenda, Belén Crespo, has emphasized that, for the fulfillment of the SDGs, one of the most relevant alliances is that of the universities because "it is the young people who have to promote the change towards a more responsible world ".

In this line, Santiago García, president of the Sector Commission of CRUE-Sustainability, added that, for the first time, "universities, as trainers of the people who will lead the world in the future, must assume a common project that will impact on All society".

For his part, the Rector Luján has been proud and has stressed the commitment that his government team has from the first moment with sustainability, corporate social responsibility and the SDGs.

The overall spirit of the whole project has been synthesized in the inaugural address by Juan José Almagro, honorary chair of the Chair of CSR of the UMU, who has ensured that, faced with the problems and challenges facing society "there is a way to contribute to change and is not resigned ".

The next highlight of the launch of the project will be the conference 'The social responsibility of companies before Human Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals' that Ramón Jáuregui, Member of the European Parliament, will give this Friday at the Cajamurcia Culture Hall, 12 hours
