Now Murcia denounces that the PP "sneaks and undemocratically" the water ordinance (30/01/2019)

- The City Council unanimously approved last June a motion by Ahora Murcia for the preparation of this Ordinance "in a participatory manner and providing for the inclusion of various institutional actors and professional organizations and citizens working on water management "

- Miguel Angel Alzamora notes that "at this point, when the municipal government has breached its commitment to draft a bylaw in a participatory and consensual manner, the minimum that Ballesta can be required is to extend the deadline - which is only one week- to receive suggestions, to meet with organizations and agents related to water, and to give due publicity to this process "

NOW MURCIA denounces that the municipal government of the PP "sneaks and undemocratically" the Water Tariff and Sanitation Ordinance of the Municipality, whose draft has been presented by surprise in today's Board of Spokespersons.

Councilman Miguel Angel Alzamora states that "the motion of Ahora Murcia last June, approved unanimously, established that the ordinance should be carried out" in a participatory manner and foreseeing the inclusion of various institutional actors and professional and citizen organizations working around to water management. "

"Against this," says Alzamora, "the only ally of the PP to draft the ordinance has been the company Agbar / Hidrogea, which is not characterized by defending the interests of citizens of Murcia, but rather the opposite, and that each year has a millionaire profits to cost to charge us the most expensive water in Spain ".

The council considers "a scandal and a joke to opposition groups and organized civil society that the PP, instead of holding meetings with them to draft, just upload it to a website for a week putting an email to which to send the suggestions, which evidently will not take into account ".

Now Murcia took to the Plenary session in June 2018 a motion for the City Council to elaborate a Water and Sanitation Tariff Ordinance for the Municipality, so that the City Council applies the rates "with legal guarantees, and with the necessary environmental and social guarantees , as well as with fair prices and appropriate to the citizenship of the municipality of Murcia.

"The ordinance must respect that these rates are public revenues under the control of the City Council," says Alzamora, who recalls that "water is a service that is offered in a monopoly, coercively, but is considered a public good and a human right by the UN since 2010 ".

The mayor of Ahora Murcia indicates that "at this point, in which the municipal government has failed to fulfill its commitment to draft a bylaw in a participatory and consensual manner, the minimum that can be required from Ballesta is to extend the term - which is of just one week- to receive suggestions, to meet with water-related organizations and agents, and to give due publicity to this process, so that interested stakeholders are aware of what is being done. This ordinance is of great importance to the municipality, and the municipal government has the obligation to carry it out democratically. "
