The UMU rewards the excellence of its students and the dedication of the staff of the institution in the act of St. Thomas Aquinas (28/01/2019)

The corridors of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Murcia were filled Monday with the colors and the essence of the university tradition to celebrate St. Thomas Aquinas, patron of universities.

The act, the most academic of all those held at the institution, served to pay tribute to those who have obtained an award for excellence for their academic results and to recognize the work of tireless work of professionals who, from all areas , they have been working for the University of Murcia for 25 years.

The auditorium of the Faculty was too small to accommodate the university staff, but above all, to the relatives of the graduates who went to collect the diplomas of their extraordinary end-of-degree awards and to those who have obtained an extraordinary prize of doctorate.

The rector, José Luján, congratulated them affectionately in his speech, wishing them "my best wishes so that the paths that you are professionally and vitally going to undertake now will lead you to places that your proven abilities deserve and your expectations, and I also congratulate your families Today, they accompany you excitedly, without your support, you would not be here this morning. "

The act of St. Thomas Aquinas is also the act in which the new doctors of the institution are received, with the ceremonial that commands the tradition.

"Congratulations wise doctors and doctors, the University recognizes today the work the effort," the rector told them;

who reminded them that "with the strength of tradition and the weight of symbols, the University requires and insists that, as professionals and as people, you live up to the academic dignity that you already have."

To those who received the University Dedication Medal for 25 years of service, the Rector Luján congratulated him "for your commitment to this century-old institution that owes you the prestige achieved and the reputation it enjoys";

assuring that "your dedication that we recognize and reward today says fundamentally of the feeling of belonging that is so necessary in any human organization".

The rector during his speech made a special emphasis on that feeling of belonging to the University of Murcia.

"The fortune for many of us is having been able to develop our professional career in their classrooms, corridors, halls, offices and laboratories, adding our small contribution to that of so many colleagues and friends to, among all, make" our home " a better university at the service of the society to which we owe ".

The most emotional moment was experienced with the presentation of the José Lostau Prize to the University Spirit and human values, which this year the Social Council has awarded posthumously to Bernardo Cascales, professor of Mathematics who died in 2018. With the entire assembly hall on its feet , his widow, Cecilia Sandoval, collected this recognition.

The rector reaffirmed the need to "keep alive in memory those who during his life enlarged the institution."

A master class in favor of inclusive education

The professor of the Faculty of Education Pilar Arnáiz was in charge of reading the magisterial lesson, which revolved around inclusive education.

After a review of how people with disabilities have historically been separated from society and the education system;

Arnáiz explained how, during the last decades, progress has been made towards the goal of a truly inclusive education, in which schoolchildren with all abilities live in the same classrooms without distinction in the organization of schooling.

It is necessary, explained Professor Arnáiz, to reform education so that there is a single educational model.

These changes, he explained, should also reach universities, where there is increasing diversity among students.

Arnáiz argued that "it is not enough to guarantee access to studies", but it is necessary to guarantee the means to avoid abandonment and encourage them to achieve academic success.

In this sense it is of vital importance, outlined, that to train the university teaching staff for this reality.

After the inaugural lecture the Minister of Universities, Business, and Environment, Javier Celdrán, took part in the event, who was convinced of the importance of inclusive education for society and of the importance of the research carried out at the university. continue to improve in a field in which, he said, "you work a lot and very well in the Region of Murcia."

Celdrán told the audience a family anecdote that makes him sure that integrating people with disabilities into the classroom not only benefits them, but "also manages to create better people and develop the values that are needed in our society."

Rector Luján, for his part, added in his speech the conviction that the University of Murcia "must play a leading role" in the social objective of "educating with fairness and justice".
