"The 'trolls' pervert cyber-activism as a phenomenon of citizen participation" (28/01/2019)

This is one of the conclusions of the thesis made by Marta Pérez Escolar, PhD in Communication Sciences from the UCAM, who this morning received the award for the best university research in the field of transparency granted by the CARM.

Dr. Marta Pérez Escolar concludes in her award-winning research that cyber-activism can not yet be considered a model of ingrained citizen political participation.

"The majority of citizens do not know how to participate or how to use the platform and Change.org does not offer tools to inform or motivate participation," says the researcher.

After analyzing more than 44,000 requests on the Change.org platform, the results of the research have shown that there are 'trolls' users who "pervert the cyber-activist dynamics and that detract from the credibility of the true actions of citizen participation. the tides of change, which had such resonance in the offline world, barely have an echo in the digital scene of Change.org "highlights the doctor from the Catholic University of Murcia.

In contrast, the study explains that as observed in the focus group held for the same, "there are cyber-activists who demonstrate an exemplary and responsible behavior and who assume, involuntarily, the role of community managers".

As a result of this doctoral thesis, Marta Pérez received this morning from Noelia Arroyo, counselor of Transparency, Participation and Spokesperson of CARM, recognition of the best research

University in the field of transparency, in an event held today, in the Palacio de San Esteban de Murcia.

The award-winning research work has been directed by José Manuel Noguera, director of the Department of Communication Sciences at the UCAM.
