Serrano: "We must reach a Pact for a Sustainable Tourism putting the accent on the garden, on its hydraulic heritage, products and gastronomy" (24/01/2019)

Murcia, January 24, 2018. - The socialist candidate for the Mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, says that tourism "should be one of the engines that drives the local economy and for this we must value the resources of our municipality , which are part of who we are, of our identity and idiosyncrasy, which are many and very beautiful ".

For the candidate, "the objective is not only to obtain a large number of visitors at the end of the year, but also that the growth of the tourism sector allows us to establish a strong, sustainable and environmentally friendly local industry that, at the same time, favors the creation of quality employment ".

"I am convinced that we are much more than what they say about us and the idea is to bet on a renewed tourism, of quality and different, that shows the world a land like ours with a rich and diverse past, productive, with a light unique and extraordinary cuisine, visitors should queue to meet us, "he says.

For Serrano, who visited FITUR yesterday, "Murcia has the enormous privilege of being a land open to the street almost all year round, and this is already an attraction for tourists, but you have to show it, you can not wish for what you do not know well, so when we arrive at the Mayor's Office we will carry out an audit of the situation to reach a Pact for Sustainable Tourism, with an emphasis on the garden, its hydraulic heritage, its products and its gastronomy, with the participation and contribution of all public and private agents and thus lay the foundation of what will be our municipality as a quality tourist destination that makes a difference. "

The socialist candidate states that "we can not continue to cling to the promotion of the Cathedral as if it were the only extraordinary thing in our municipality, let alone encourage what is not yet available for tourism, as is the case of the San Esteban or the surroundings of the Castle of Monteagudo, where we are still in a very initial phase for its valorization ".

On the other hand, and precisely taking into account the climatic characteristics of the municipality and the new transport infrastructures, "we are forced to revive tourism related to business and congresses, which can deseasonalise our offer and generate high economic income".

"The promotion of tourism is necessary to know our land, to strengthen an important economic niche for the development of the municipality but also because it will allow us to invest in our cultural heritage so that it is in the best conditions and can be visited," he adds.
