UMU students and faculty will tutor girls and teenagers to inspire their interest in technology (23/01/2019)

The University of Murcia will actively collaborate with the Talent STEM association, whose objectives are linked to the promotion of the use of technology to promote social development and one of its challenges is to inspire girls and adolescents to develop scientific and technical careers.

The rector of the University, José Luján, has signed an agreement with STEM Talent on Wednesday that will allow UMU students and teachers to participate in tutoring young people in the Tecnovation Challenge program, which already has 150 enrolled for this year.

Tecnovation Challenge is an international program that Talent Stem has sponsored in the Region of Murcia and proposes teams formed by girls between ten and eighteen years of age the challenge of solving a social problem in their environment through the use of technology and entrepreneurship.

Helped by the person who exercises the tutorship, the participants devise their solution while they learn basic programming, think an idea for a mobile application and develop a prototype.

In addition, they define the business plan and create the marketing materials necessary to present their idea to investors.

In short, it is about becoming technological entrepreneurs.

This project is developed in more than one hundred countries in which regional and national competitions are held.

The teams with the most innovative ideas compete in the international phases with teams from countries on five continents in the facilities of Google, in Silicon Valley (USA), where the winning projects are chosen.

"Thanks to the collaboration with the University of Murcia we got the participating girls have university references and, in addition, in the medium term there is also a return to the University, because we are sure that there will be more students who decide to be interested in careers in the disciplines STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics in its acronym in English), "he said after signing the agreement Helena Flores, president of Talent STEM.

The rector of the University of Murcia has expressed his satisfaction for the start of this collaboration that is in the line "of our commitment to the objectives of sustainable development and the commitment to innovation."

On the other hand, Cristina Sánchez, vice-rector of Students, highlighted the involvement of the University of Murcia with volunteering as part of the actions "to achieve a more just society".

In order to participate in the Tecnovation Challenge program there are no other requirements than forming a group of girls interested in learning.
