"Murcia becomes" (21/01/2019)

The total number of travelers in this 2018 has skyrocketed by 30.83% compared to 2015 and overnight stays have increased in these three years by 35.75%, surpassing for the first time in the history of the municipality the barrier of 780,000.

José Ballesta: "Murcia is becoming one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Spanish Mediterranean, as attested by the latest figures of travelers and occupancy."

The economic impact of tourism in the municipality has exceeded 262 million euros per year, representing an increase of 77%.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesus Pacheco, today presented the tourism promotion campaign that the City of Murcia will take to FITUR next Wednesday and reported on the latest tourist data in the municipality.

The total number of travelers in this 2018 has been 466.885, 30.83% more than in 2015 and overnight stays have experienced an increase of 35.75% over three years ago, from 578,000 to 785,000, exceeding by the first time in the history of the municipality the barrier of 780,000 overnight stays.

Under the slogan 'A Murcia becomes', the City Council will bring to FITUR the tourist promotion video with which the seventh capital of Spain presents its tourist offer to the national and foreign market.

"Through the walk through Murcia of a young traveler, the audiovisual production travels through the enclaves, landscapes and most beautiful monuments of our town, making known our gastronomy, heritage and the cultural and leisure offer of our city, which is becoming in one of the most attractive tourist destinations of the Spanish Mediterranean, as attested by the latest figures of travelers and occupancy ".

The video, which will be shown on Wednesday at the FITUR Region stand and combines the latest audiovisual techniques such as the 'hyperlapse' and 'stop motion', ends with the image of the International Airport of the Region and the slogan 'A Murcia becomes', which refers to the loyalty of tourism and the idea of ​​converting visitors who come to Murcia in prescribers of the city in their respective places of origin.

The production will be disseminated in social networks, as well as conferences, fairs and international congresses.

The magazine 'Murcia' is born

José Ballesta will also present on Wednesday 23 at FITUR the first edition of the magazine 'Murcia', edited by the City Council and that, with a first print run of 8,000 copies, disseminates both Spanish and English, the tourist and cultural offer of the municipality of Murcia.

The journal will be published every six months (although additional numbers may be published), it includes a map of the city and will be disseminated in hotels and tourist offices, as well as conferences, fairs and international congresses.

It is a very visual and high quality graphic publication that covers the history of our town, its landscapes and natural surroundings, the richness of our cuisine, the routes and main monuments, as well as our museums and leisure offer, with a place reserved for fiestas and Holy Week in Murcia.

Tourism breaks historic records

With respect to the data on travelers and tourism in Murcia, the total number of travelers in this 2018 has been 466.885, 30.83% more than in 2015, when they counted 356.853.

Overnight stays recorded this past year have reached a record 785.0000, 35.75% more than in 2015, with a special increase in foreign travelers, which have soared by 49%.

With regard to hotel occupancy, it has gone from 54% in 2015 to 61% in 2018, which represents a growth of 12%.

The average price has varied from 46.46 euros to 53.39 euros.

Murcia agglutinates the 35.21% of the total tourism that registers the Region.

Tourism is a key sector for the local economy and its economic impact in the municipality has exceeded 262.66 million euros in 2017, which represents an increase of 77% since 2015. In the city of Murcia the number of people living from tourist activity has multiplied by two since three years ago.

In 2017 alone, tourism generated 35,426 jobs.
