A UMU thesis concludes that the distance between the anus and the male genitalia influences the quality of the semen (18/01/2019)

A thesis of the University of Murcia, conducted by Consuelo Pérez Palazón, has analyzed the distance between the anus and the male genitalia (anogenital distance or AGD) as one of the factors associated with the variability of semen quality.

The work concludes that males whose anogenital distance is larger could systematically have better seminal parameters over time.

In this way, the distance between the anus and the male genitalia becomes a variable to take into account to analyze the quality of semen, taking into account that multiple factors can have a potential impact on human seminal quality, such as habits food, physical exercise, sexual activity, stress, consumption of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco, etc.

To carry out the investigation, a prospective and follow-up study was carried out, carrying out repeated measures of semen quality analysis in a group of healthy males during one year.

Obtaining the seminal samples was approximately every 4 to 6 weeks.

Following the guidelines of the WHO, parameters such as the volume and concentration of the ejaculate, the total sperm count of each sample, their morphology and their mobility, as well as the sperm DNA fragmentation were evaluated.

Of all of them, the only parameter in which the research can not give conclusive data is in relation to the fragmentation of sperm DNA, which refers to breaks or injuries in the genetic material of sperm.

In this specific case, it would be necessary to carry out new investigations to determine the diagnosis of greater or lesser fertility.

In each individual, two types of AGD measurements were taken: from the anus to the posterior base of the scrotum (AGDAS) and to the cephalic insertion of the penis (AGDAP).

In addition, the subjects completed epidemiological surveys on their life habits in each of the interviews.

The thesis has been directed by Jaime Mendiola Olivares and Alberto Manuel Torres Cantero, professors of Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the University of Murcia.
