Murcia and La Coruña, national references for their models of urban transformation through the 2030 Agenda (18/01/2019)

José Ballesta participates in the II International Encounter 'Think Europe': Commitment 2030, the specialized international forum that deals with urban transformation processes.

The Strategy of the City of Murcia has been recognized as one of the best in Spain in competitive competition with more than a hundred cities.

The City Council is designing the Plan of Action of the 2030 Urban Agenda, which is articulated under the slogan 'All make city'.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, participated today in the II International Meeting 'Think Europe': Commitment 2030, Intermediate Cities, Keys to Development, the specialized international forum that deals with urban transformation processes, and in which Murcia shares leadership with La Coruña, as national benchmarks for their city models through the 2030 Urban Agenda, the strategic planning instrument aimed at prioritizing the sustainable development of cities in the next decade.

José Ballesta was the only mayor of a Spanish city, along with the mayor of La Coruña, Julio José Ferreiro, who participated in the international debate table on 'Planning and management of urban space', which included the analysis of senior representatives of the UN, the Ministries of Development and Finance, the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), and mayors of Africa and Latin America.

"Never before has the world been so urban.

For the first time in the history of mankind, the majority of the planet's population lives in cities.

The 21st century is the century of cities.

Each week one million people move from rural to urban areas.

It is estimated that by the year 2030 75% of the world population will live in cities and in Spain it will be 80%, "said José Ballesta.

The mayor of Murcia presented the axes of the Strategy of the City of Murcia, recognized as one of the best in Spain in competitive competition with more than a hundred cities.

"We opened a participatory process through which the Murcians transferred their vision of the municipality and the priority actions of the city project that we are developing," said José Ballesta, who indicated that "at the same time that we move forward in the management of projects that are in progress, now we have to think about the future and position ourselves as a benchmark capital in a 10-year time horizon, with a strategic planning of the city ".

For this, the City of Murcia is designing the Action Plan of the Urban Agenda 2030, which is articulated under the slogan 'All make city', with the aim of leading the implementation at the national level the implementation of this instrument of city planning that prioritizes sustainable economic growth, social cohesion, the fight against inequality and climate change.

For the preparation of the Urban Agenda 2030, the City of Murcia is actively participating in two working groups: the Urban Initiatives Network of the Ministry of Finance, through the working group 'Spanish Urban Agenda', and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, within the working group of Local Entities for the Spanish Urban Agenda.
