The open excavations in San Esteban are extended until spring (16/01/2019)

The City Council and the UMU extend their agreement and extend the field work another three months, which will allow the excavations to extend to the large house of 340 m2, adjacent to the 'funduk'.

More than 600 people have already walked down a street in the Murcia of the twelfth century, thanks to the guided tours offered by the City Council.

Researchers have discovered valuable pieces of Andalusian ceramics and glass in one of the rooms of the 'funduk' and new findings have led them to reinterpret the monumental set of the oratory.

"Who wants to walk down a street in the Medieval Murcia and discover, among real buildings, how our ancestors lived, what they ate, how their day to day was, how they thought and what the Murcians of the 12th and 12th centuries felt, will have to come to San Esteban, "said the mayor, who said that" as advance of the different findings and hypotheses of the researchers, next February 7 will be an open conference given by Professor Eiroa and will open at the City Hall an exhibition with

Valuable pieces of ceramics of the 12th century in the 'funduk'

In these first two months of work, archaeologists have confirmed that the Enclosure I ('funduk') fulfilled the function of hostelry in the last Andalusi phase (13th century).

In this area, they have found the whole conformed by latrines, which had not come to light in the excavation of 2009 and stands out for its optimal conservation, offering valuable information on how the Murcians of medieval times lived (archaeobotanical and of parasites that will shed information about their diet and the geographical origin of the people who inhabited this medieval suburb).

With respect to the work carried out in the cemetery, a total of 22 burials have been discovered to date.

Currently, the specialists are investigating if it is a family or neighborhood cemetery and have sent six samples of Carbon 14 to study the chronology of the remains, to a specialized laboratory in Miami.

Work in this area will continue until spring.

Reinterpretación del oratorio

Reinterpretation of the oratory

archaeologists have dated some of the walls of the oratory to the late medieval period, which is leading them to

reinterpret their initial hypotheses about this monumental complex.
