Murcia now requires the immediate development of the traffic plan that includes the municipality's pollution protocol (16/01/2019)

It also requests that the network of measurement stations be expanded in the municipality, since there is only one, which is also obsolete.

NOW MURCIA demands the immediate elaboration of the traffic plan that, according to the Municipality's Pollution Protocol, should exist.

Councilor Alicia Morales recalls that although traffic is the main cause of high pollution in the municipality, with worrying episodes in recent weeks and months, the traffic measures and resources necessary for cases in that the high atmospheric pollution leads to activate the municipal Protocol.

The elaboration of the traffic plan is one of the agreements of the motion on air pollution in the municipality that Now Murcia will take to the next Plenary.

The motion also contemplates the installation of a particle meter PM 2.5 in the city of Murcia and that its measurements and control are taken into account in the Protocol, since despite the Royal Decree 102/2011, of January 28 , regarding the improvement of air quality, establishes limits for PM10 particles - those whose diameter is less than 10 microns - and PM2.5 those with a diameter less than 2.5 microns -, there is no PM2 particle meter .5 in the municipality, nor are these particles so harmful to health within the Protocol of the City of Murcia contemplated.

Alicia Morales emphasizes the importance of adopting these proposals, "since the effectiveness of the Protocol against air pollution in the municipality is quite deficient without these measures."

Law 34/2007, of November 15, on air quality and protection of the atmosphere, establishes for municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants and agglomerations, obligations such as having facilities and evaluation networks, informing the population about the pollution and air quality levels, develop plans and programs for air quality objectives, and integrate the considerations related to atmospheric protection in the planning of the different sectoral policies, adopting when necessary measures of total or partial restriction of traffic .

The Murcia Now motion also establishes that the network of measurement stations in the municipality be expanded, since there is currently only one, located in the San Basilio district.

The mayor points out that "as has been discussed in the Plenary on several occasions, a single station is very

insufficient for a municipality of the extension of ours, besides that it is obsolete.

It is time for administrations to undertake the update and expansion of the network at once ".

Alicia Morales recalls that "there is unanimity in considering air pollution in cities as one of the biggest problems of the 21st century, with enormous consequences for people's health, causing multiple illnesses and even death. The City Council of Murcia takes the issue with much greater seriousness than it has done up to now, so that the municipality's Pollution Protocol should not be left alone on paper, but must be materialized in concrete measures, and beyond emergency actions the episodes of greater contamination, it is essential that structural measures are adopted in the short, medium and long term, to make our municipality a habitable, healthy and safe place for the current citizenship and for the next generations ".
