Fourteen people were treated by the SEMAS tonight in the special device because of the low temperatures (12/01/2019)

Fourteen homeless people received street attention during the last night by the Mobile Emergency Service of Social Attention (SEMAS) in the framework of the "Operation Cold" launched by the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, in collaboration with Jesus Abandoned.

Of these 14 people in a street situation -11 men and 3 women-, two agreed to be transferred to the sheltered center of Jesus Abandoned, while the others received hot drinks, blankets and sleeping bags.

Considering the nationalities, 5 were from Spain, 3 from Bulgaria and 1 from Germany, Romania, Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia and Senegal.

The Semas team toured the entire city, especially the downtown area, Gran Vía, near the Cathedral, the Condomina area, Barrio del Carmen and Malecón.

Ayuntamiento and Jesús Abandonado set up a specific device for the cold days, which consists of reinforcing the work they have been doing since the beginning of winter between the two entities.

It has been carried out with street routes, through the social workers of Jesus Abandoned, morning and afternoon of Thursday, and in the early hours of Friday to Saturday with the Mobile Emergency and Social Care Service (SEMAS) team, dependent of the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation.

All teams had gloves, blankets, sleeping bags, food and hot drinks to provide to people who were on the street.

Also the Local Police vehicles carried blankets in their vehicles.

The purpose of the device is to guide and inform of the possibility of going to the resources that the City Council provides them, whether in Jesus Abandoned or in pensions.

"What we want is that on cold days no one stays on the street.

For this we have sufficient beds and material resources to overcome these days of low temperatures in the best possible way.

Although this work is developed throughout the year, it is especially hard in episodes of extreme temperatures, either by heat or cold.

On those occasions, the coordination maintained throughout the year by both institutions is reinforced to be prepared in case there are more people willing to go to the shelter to escape the cold.

The SEMAS goes through the streets, gardens, ATMs and garden areas of the municipality, providing assistance to people who sleep on public roads and need it, who are given blankets, sleeping bags, waterproofs, hot drinks, etc. , according to the needs of each case.
