The Poor Clares of Algezares guard the Holy Face of Alicante (09/01/2019)

A group of five Poor Sisters from Santa Clara, from the convent of Santa Verónica de Algezares, has moved to the monastery of Santa Faz in Alicante, to guard the relic that is venerated in it.

A decision that the nuns took after the request of the president of the Federation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Sisters Clarisas.

The Clarisas will take turns to maintain both convents and continue, also, with their daily activities, study and work.

That is why, the group that is in Santa Faz will be rotating and varying in number, between 3 and 5 religious.

"It's an adventure," says Sister Leonor, one of the nuns who is already in the convent of Alicante, who says they are excited about this mission that they started yesterday.

For 500 years the Poor Clares were the custodies of the relic of the Holy Face.

Last November the three nuns that formed that community left due to "the lack of vocations, their state of health and advanced age," according to a statement from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Federation of Sisters Clarisas, the Cabildo de the Cathedral of Alicante and the City Council of Alicante.

When leaving the convent, the nuns of Alicante entered Cieza.

At that time a process of recovery of the monastic life began with the sacred relic.

"The president of the federation asked us," Sister Leonor explains, "if we could, for a time, take charge of this convent, as well as ours, so that the presence of our Order could continue."

The stay of the sisters of the Murcia convent in the Santa Faz is temporary, until a new community can remain in the monastery in a stable manner.
