Fundación Jesús Abandonado and Murcia City Council reinforce coordination and resources in the face of the polar cold alert (09/01/2019)

Responsible for the Jesús Abandonado Foundation and the City of Murcia, the Mobile Emergency and Social Care Service (SEMAS) and Local Police have held a meeting with the aim of strengthening the existing coordination and resources available to the homeless, the polar cold warning that is expected to hit the Region of Murcia these days.

Thus, Daniel Lopez, director of Jesus Abandoned, along with the councilor of Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, and the mayor of Traffic, Security and Citizen Protection, Lola Sanchez, said that "our street team works in coordination with the SEMAS teams and Police throughout the year, something that greatly facilitates the work of attention to people who are on the street at times like this that Murcia suffers an intense cold.

"It is thanks to this continuous work throughout the year that we carry out together so that now the effects of an emergency can be mitigated with greater ease."

In this way, "we now reinforce that coordination and those resources that we have available, in case those people who are on the street want to take refuge in these colder moments and lower temperatures, so that they have access to a safe place where they can pass the night".

In 2018 the Fundación Jesús Abandonado helped 63 people in a street situation, distributing a total of 1200 blankets, in addition to providing warm clothes, coffee, or gloves and hats to combat the cold.

Daniel López explains that "they do not have access to any recourse for different reasons, mainly due to mental health problems, addictions or both at the same time, which makes it more difficult to establish a link with them and get out of that situation."

"The people who live in the street already know and maintain some kind of link with the municipal teams and the Jesus Abandoned Foundation, and the key is that these people are linked to municipal resources or our own, such as the Center by Day, open uninterruptedly from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday, so that they gradually leave this dynamic. "

The majority profile of people who are on the street is a man, of Spanish nationality, between 35 and 55 years old, "although that does not mean that women are not on the street as well".

Currently, the Jesus Abandoned Foundation has 248 places of accommodation, distributed in a reception center, the 'Housing First' program (housing, first), housing with support and a social pension.

In addition, contacts have been maintained with other pensions to know how many beds can be available and where, regardless of the existing seats on a regular basis.

As reported by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), in the Region of Murcia it is expected that the coldest days are Friday and Saturday, when minimum temperatures of up to two degrees below zero and maximum of thirteen degrees will be recorded in the city of Murcia.
