The works of the Greenway receive a strong impulse and face its equator (31/10/2018)

Today the installation of the new pedestrian crossing of Los Ramos has begun, which will allow the neighbors to cross from one side to the other with total comfort and safety, eliminating the stairs and accused pending.

José Ballesta indicated that "the Greenway, together with 'Murcia River' and the elimination of the railway track on its way through Murcia are part of the strategic project of the city 'Conexión Sur', destined to recover the centrality and protagonism of the neighborhoods and southern districts ".

The Greenway will enable a 8.5 km pedestrian and cyclist itinerary and high landscape value, connecting the Huerta and the districts of the Costera Sur with the city.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, visited the works of the Greenway today, in Los Ramos, the new 8.5 km healthy itinerary that will connect the districts of the South on foot and by bicycle, a transformation project of the municipality whose works face its equator and that will allow to incorporate 200,000 m2 of spaces of high landscape value, connecting the Huerta and the districts of the Costera Sur with the city of Murcia.

"Today, the new pedestrian crossing crossing this section of track in Los Ramos has been installed and, after the elimination of the previous large-scale metal infrastructure with several flights of stairs, it will allow the neighbors to cross from one side to the other. of this new green environment with total comfort and safety, through soft ramps and ensuring universal accessibility, "said the mayor, who visited the works with the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, and the councilor of Pedanías, Participation and Decentralization, Marco Antonio Fernández.

José Ballesta said that "the Greenway is part of the strategic project of the city 'Conexión Sur', aimed at recovering the centrality and prominence of the neighborhoods and districts of the south, and for which the City Council is recovering the Segura river environment for turn it into a natural and urban space of leisure and conviviality, and project a large avenue with gardens and green areas, playgrounds, living areas and outdoor sports spaces in the other 200,000 m2 of public space that Murcia will gain with the elimination of railway track on surface.

"The other priority objective is to recover the centrality of the neighborhoods and districts of the south, through greater cohesion among population centers, uniting people, creating social and economic cohesion through the elimination of these barriers and allowing these districts, which have been developing on both sides of the road, recover the connection and share new opportunities for growth, "explained the mayor.

Operators have installed the new pedestrian platform with the help of a large crane on the pillars whose height has been reduced, providing a straight and accessible passage to the height of Parras Street.

This new step will be opened before Christmas, meanwhile, the neighbors can use the other one at only 150 m.

In addition, José Ballesta said that "this November the works will receive a strong boost, since they are going to start planting the 1,800 trees that will fill the Vía Verde with life and will complete the work of installing the irrigation network, which It covers a total length of 8.5 km. "

Since the work began in the summer until now, the entire route of the Greenway has been leveled and cleaned, the installation of the irrigation system has been prepared and the holes have been dug in which the 1,800 trees that will be added will be planted. the 400 already existing in the field.

Also, the City Council has eliminated the three elevated pedestrian walkways that crossed the old railway line in Beniaján (two) and San José de la Vega, proceeding to the dismantling of the large metal infrastructures that crossed the road and responding to a historic claim of the neighbors.

The new Greenway will cover the districts of Los Dolores, San José de la Vega, Beniaján, Torreagüera and Los Ramos, through an itinerary of 8.5 kilometers, which will directly benefit 45,000 residents.

José Ballesta said that "we are going to return to Murcia and Murcia a space that is theirs, a space that has been delimited by barriers and in disuse for many years and that, this next spring, will open to all to become a resource natural and leisure only in Murcia, which can be enjoyed on foot and by bicycle.

A walk through the heart of the Vega del Segura and the Sierra Murcia

The new Vía Verde crosses the heart of the Huerta de Murcia and offers unique scenic views: on one side, the entire Vega del Segura, and on the other, the Miravete and Altaona mountain ranges.

It is also a route very close to the towns and their services, which also makes possible the gastronomic and leisure activities.
