Crue applauds the decision to incorporate Philosophy as mandatory in Baccalaureate (31/10/2018)

Roberto Fernández, president of Crue Universidades Españolas, has celebrated the Government's decision to incorporate the subject of the History of Philosophy as compulsory in the two Bachillerato courses.

This is a measure that this institution already requested last February to the previous General Secretariat of Universities, to understand that the suppression of this subject as a compulsory core subject in the Organic Law for the Improvement of Educational Quality (LOMCE) produced "the practical disappearance of Philosophy in Secondary Education" and "endangered" the university studies of Philosophy.

The Executive announced last Thursday, October 18, that it accepted the petition approved unanimously in the Commission of Education and Vocational Training of the Congress of Deputies and that it was committed, therefore, to introduce History of Philosophy as a compulsory subject in the future reform of the LOMCE.

The Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Isabel Celaá, stressed that this measure will help students who "grow immersed in a world full of information, in a hyperconnected society, to develop a critical thinking that allows them to distinguish the important from the accessory and the foundations of the world in which we live ".

Antonio Campillo, defender of Philosophy

Antonio Campillo, professor of Philosophy at the University of Murcia and dean of the faculty until the beginning of last summer, has been a key player in the struggle to recover Philosophy in high school from his position as president of the Conference of Deans of Philosophy and president of the Spanish Philosophy Network (REF), which brought together the faculties and departments of this subject throughout Spain, the Institute of Philosophy of the CSIC and more than fifty associations.

The REF was confronted from the start by the "Wert Law", which had suppressed two of the three philosophical subjects of secondary education: Ethics and the History of Philosophy.

On May 17, 2017, he appeared in the subcommittee for the Educational Pact.

"That same day," explains Antonio Campillo, "PP Education spokesperson, Sandra Moneo, acknowledged that they had made a mistake, and all parties assured me they were in agreement on the recovery of Philosophy."

"It has been a great victory, but now we are in talks with the Ministry to get that agreement transformed into law," says Campillo, for whom this is an achievement of all the Philosophy faculty of Spain.

The agreement is very important for two reasons, he explains: because it has revealed that there is a broad political and social consensus on the importance of Philosophy in the education system;

and because it is proposed to regulate a training cycle of three courses, analogous to other basic subjects such as Language, Mathematics and History.

"All this will ensure that the students receive a good philosophical education, necessary for their personal maturation and very useful to improve their professional preparation in any field they choose."

Campillo congratulates the current president of the REF, María José Guerra.

and all his team for the magnificent work done.

"Now it is necessary to get the government to transform the PNL into law, the struggle continues, but an unanimous agreement of the Congress of Deputies in favor of Philosophy is an unprecedented victory." Students from all over Spain will be the main beneficiaries of this great political agreement. "

Philosophy for Latin America

At this moment, Antonio Campillo is in Aguascalientes, Mexico, where he will attend the constituent assembly of the Ibero-American Philosophy Network (RIF), integrated by the national associations of the different countries of Latin America, the Caribbean, Portugal and Spain.

The creation of the RIF is a very important step for all Ibero-American countries to coordinate and to promote, on a global scale, the philosophy that is made in Spanish and Portuguese, against the academic hegemony of English and the Anglophone world.
