The Smart City looks to the University as a strategic ally to face the challenges of the digital revolution (24/10/2018)

José Ballesta participates in the international forum 'Future in Spanish', held in Logrońo, within the debate on 'Digital education as an engine of development in Spain and Latin America'.

The mayor highlights "the strategic alliance between the City Council and the University of Murcia to promote our Smart City project, which seeks to make Murcia a more efficient city, but also freer and more equal".

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, participated today in the table 'Digital education as an engine of development in Spain and Latin America', which was held in Logrońo within the international forum 'Future in Spanish', and in which he highlighted " the close technological collaboration "between the City Council and the University of Murcia in the smart city project 'MiMurcia'.

"Cities have to establish strategic alliances with universities because they need each other to attract talent and as a focus of innovation and attraction of companies.

An example of this strategic alliance is that in the city of Murcia we have within our Smart City project, in which we work directly with the University of Murcia, "said José Ballesta, who pointed out that" the ultimate goal of the smart city is to achieve efficient management among all areas of the city, seeking greater efficiency and sustainability, but above all to make the city a freer and more equal space ".

José Ballesta participated in this debate -moderated by the journalist of the La Rioja newspaper Carmen Nevot- together with the Minister of Education, Training and Employment of the Government of La Rioja, Alberto Galiana;

former Minister of Information Technology and Communications of Colombia, David Luna;

and the director of the Engineering School of UNIR (International University of La Rioja), Rubén González.

The mayor of Murcia began by noting that "the world had never been so urban".

"For the first time in the history of mankind, most of the history of the planet's population lives in cities.

By the year 2025 about 70% of the world population will be urban and in Spain it is possible that this figure reaches 80% ".

"In the city of Murcia, which is now close to 500,000 inhabitants after XIII centuries of history, 30% of these inhabitants have been acquired in the last 20 years.

The pace of growth of cities is today the largest in the history of mankind, "he said.

"There are 40 urban agglomerations in the world that group only 18% of the population, but they accumulate 66% of economic activity and 85% of technological and scientific innovation.

That is, not only people are in the cities, but also talent, creativity and knowledge, which is the prime subject of the new social model: the knowledge society, "said the councilor.

"Precisely for this reason, the university demand continues to grow and the world is also increasingly university.

In the year 2000 there were 100 million university students in the world, a figure that will double in 2025 to 252 million.

And since 2003 there are more women in universities than men. "

Finally, he stated that "educational institutions of any level must adapt to this social change.

Today, 46% of university students are taking at least one online course and in two years 50% of higher education will be 100% online. "
