El Moneo will light up on Wednesday in support of the global fight against Polio (22/10/2018)

This initiative is led by Rotary International and the Clubs of the Region of Murcia.

It will take place at 8:30 p.m., coinciding with the International Day of the Fight against Poliomyelitis.

2,500 million children around the world have already been vaccinated, achieving the almost complete eradication of the disease.

The Rotary Clubs carry out numerous solidarity initiatives, both globally and locally in the Region of Murcia itself.

The fight against Poliomyelitis is the most ambitious program led by Rotary International through the Rotary Foundation, which is turning 101 this year.

The facade of the Moneo building will be illuminated on Wednesday with a dynamic play of lights of different shades as a sign of the global commitment to eradicate polio, a struggle led by Rotary International through its Rotary Foundation and which has already allowed the vaccination of 2.5 billion of children around the world.

The lighting will start at 20.30, start with some projections and then the facade of the Moneo will remain lit red, coinciding with the International Day of the Fight against Poliomyelitis.

This is an initiative carried out by the City of Murcia at the request of the Rotary Clubs Murcia, Murcia North, Molina de Segura, Murcia University, Cartagena, Cartagena Roman Theater, San Javier Mar Menor, Torre Pacheco and Santomera, as well as Rotaract Clubs of Murcia and Murcia International.

2,500 million children have already been vaccinated

To understand the importance of fighting this viral disease that can affect the spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis, it is necessary to go back to the end of the 70s, when Rotary International launched this health program. global scope.

From then until now, a whole new generation of humanity, composed of 2.500 million children, has been vaccinated, thanks to a global investment of 1.800 million dollars by Rotary International and the achievement of more than 8,000 million donations. governmental organizations that Rotary International has involved in this great project.

This has allowed that, of the 120 nations in which the Polio was considered an endemic disease, today they have been reduced to two: Afghanistan and Pakistan;

going from 350,000 diagnosed cases a year to only 11 cases this year.

Rotary International through its Rotary Foundation carries out this program in collaboration with the United Nations (UN), through Unicef ​​and the World Health Organization (WHO), also counting on the contribution of the Bill Foundation & Melinda Gates who, in her intense support for this cause, contributes $ 2 for every dollar that Rotary gets.
