City Council and Autonomous Community renew their commitment to strengthen assistance to victims of gender violence on weekends (09/10/2018)

The agreement allows for the maintenance of a special device composed of psychologists and social workers who provide accompaniment and psychological care in emergency situations.

The Unit of Psychosocial Attention in Emergencies has been activated from 2016 until today in 477 occasions, of which about 125 have been for gender violence.

The City of Murcia and the Autonomous Community remain firm commitment to work together, involving the resources of both administrations, in order to strengthen the assistance provided to women victims of gender violence in Murcia.

Among other aspects, this cooperation allows the maintenance of a protection and assistance device through the Emergency Psychosocial Care Unit (UPSE) of the City Council, which deploys a psychological support and assistance service in emergency situations.

The councilors of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, and Traffic, Security and Citizen Protection, Lola Sanchez, together with the Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities, Violante Tomás, this morning have presented the extension of the collaboration agreement for continue offering the service of protection and integral assistance to victims of gender violence in the municipality, through the Civil Protection Volunteer Association.

The device, made up of 28 volunteers, both psychologists and social workers, acts on weekends, with 24-hour guards, thus completing the ordinary care that the Autonomous Community offers to victims of gender violence.

Thus, once derived from the Emergency Telephonic Attention Device for Battered Women, civil protection volunteers, trained in emergencies and crisis intervention, offer psychological assistance, comprehensive and immediate to women victims of gender violence and their children. .

In addition, they are transferred to the victim's home or to the place where it deems appropriate, in order to effectively carry out the task of accompaniment in the interventions that are necessary.

Voluntary assistance

With this agreement, the City Council provides its available means to strengthen the protection and comprehensive assistance to victims of gender violence in the municipality and, in this case, with an aspect that should not be forgotten, and is that the Association of Civil Protection Volunteers It is made up of volunteers - currently has 100 members - who throughout the year perform around 600 interventions between preventive actions, emergencies and assistance.

Of these, the Psychosocial Unit in Emergencies has its main function in providing support to victims and family members, especially due to anxiety crisis, traffic accidents and communication of bad news.

Thus, for example, in 2016 they intervened for 4 days with the families affected by the floods in Los Alcázares, in the traffic accident in which 5 young people in Torre Pacheco lost their lives or in the suicide attempt of a woman in Sangonera. Verde, who was persuaded by the intervention of this Unit.
