The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Trade, Organization and Institutional Relations, Maruja Pelegrín, will discover this afternoon the monolith that pays tribute to José María Vela Urrea, a public event attended by the 91-year-old honoree , as well as members of the Opinion Group 'Los Espectadores' -who have promoted the initiative-, and representatives of the Peñas Huertanas Federation.
Born in the neighborhood of Santa Eulalia on June 12, 1927, the draftsman, writer and publicist José María Vela, known as 'Pepico, the der lane pegao al río', currently resides in Vistalegre, next to the square that pays him homage .
His nickname is because in 1976 he made a project on the diversion of traffic passing through the center of Murcia, along the left bank of the Segura River (Lieutenant Flomesta), which, although it did not materialize, won a national award granted by the Ministry of Public Works.
He also proposed other ideas such as a monorail to connect the capital with Molina de Segura or a metro for Murcia.
José María Vela is the author of the famous letter of the Huerta Mass in panocho, which was premiered in April 1985 in the Cathedral by the Group of Choirs and Dances 'Alma Huertana' of the Peña 'El Zarangollo'.
He has been participating in the Bando de la Huerta since 1955 and has competed in the contests of Panocho on numerous occasions, obtaining various awards and recognitions.
In addition, he is an active writer in specialized publications about the fiestas of Murcia and his folklore (he has been editor of 'El Panocho', with a circulation of 10,000 copies), as well as in regional media.
He has also written several books, all of them referring to Murcia, its history and customs, is the author of two plays and today maintains the blog 'Spain yesterday', where he publishes various articles of the current affairs of the municipality.
