José Ballesta has visited the rehabilitation works, which represent an investment of more than 3 million euros.

The city will gain a new cultural space of first level, open to all Murcia.

The partitions of the three floors of both buildings are being eliminated, which will allow to enjoy wide and luminous rooms destined to the artistic creation and the cultural activity.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, visited the rehabilitation works being carried out in pavilions 1 and 2 of the Artillery Barracks, which will reopen its doors as a reference space for the creation, development, diffusion and promotion of culture.

The works began at the end of July in Hall 1, the largest of the set of the six that make up this space, with an area of 2,968 m2 distributed between the ground floor and two more heights.

The partitions of the rooms of the three floors of the building have already been eliminated, which will allow to enjoy an open and bright space destined to the culture.

Tasks have already been done to evaluate the final reinforcement of the foundation and the restoration of the facades is going to be carried out, as well as the repair of the balustrades of the balconies and roofs.

As for Pavilion 2, the 2,256 m2 of the ground floor, first and second floor will be rehabilitated.

The partition walls of the second one have already been demolished and the first one is half finished.

It is planned to reinforce the structure, increasing its load capacity, increasing the thickness of the pillars and having archaeological supervision, both in the dismantling phase and in the demolitions.

In addition, an elevator will be installed to create an itinerary that guarantees universal accessibility.

Restoration of the original facade and details of Moorish inspiration

In both pavilions the facades will also be restored, (conserving their original materials, ornamentation, carpentry and holes), paying special attention to the moldings and azulejeados cloths of Moorish inspiration.

These works, which have a deadline of 12 months, will fully recover for the city an extensive space dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of cultural events, which will open its doors next July, enabling a first-class cultural facility, which favors artistic creativity throughout the municipality.

An investment of more than 3 million

Currently, the Artillery Barracks enclosure hosts the Río Segura Municipal Library, the Museum and the UMU Aquarium, the Professional Conservatory or the Cendeac and Párraga centers.

The works represent an investment of 3,148,000 euros (1,723,000 million in Hall 1 and 1,424,000 in Hall 2), and will be co-financed by 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Murcia IT Strategy: Innovation and Tradition.
