San Pedro Nolasco shines again in the Rector of the UMU (06/09/2018)

The pictorial work "San Pedro Nolasco intercedes for the monks", a seventeenth-century canvas attributed to Jerónimo Jacinto de Espinosa will once again shine in the Convalecencia building, seat of the Rector's Office of the University of Murcia, after being subjected to a meticulous restoration by the technicians of the Restoration Center of the Autonomous Community.

The characteristic reds, the clothes and the faces of this painting once again look like those that Jerónimo Jacinto de Espinosa devised and painted more than 350 years ago.

This morning the presentation of the painting and delivery to the University of Murcia was carried out in an event that was attended by the Minister of Tourism and Culture Miriam Guardiola Salmerón and the Rector of the UMU among other personalities.

The Counselor remarked that from her department "we continue supporting and betting on the recovery, rehabilitation and protection of our historical and cultural heritage, which makes the Region of Murcia great and makes it more attractive as a tourist destination".

For his part, Rector José Luján thanked the magnificent results of the restoration, "which has allowed the UMU to recover a magnificent work of great artistic value".

He thanked for his meticulous work to the technicians of "a Restoration Center that is almost a museum" for the pieces that can be seen in full restoration work. "" From now on he said-, anyone can enjoy this splendid work in the Rectorate ".

The director of the center, Francisco López Soldevila emphasized that the merit of this restoration is of all his team, in which each one has a concrete work, which has allowed that after a year and a half of work, this old work will return to look practically like in its origins.

The vice-rector of Quality, Communication and Culture Fco. Javier Martínez Méndez;

the General Director of Cultural Property Juan Antonio Lorca;

the professor and director of the Department of Art Joaquín Cánovas and Francisco Caballero, Coordinator of Culture of the UMU.

UMU: an art museum in the heart of Murcia

The painting comes from the private collection of Álvaro D'Estoup, Marqués de Corvera and one of the greatest collectors of painting in Spain at the time, and was, along with eight others of his property, the initiator of that great art museum which is today the University of Murcia, which brings together in the Rectorate and other dependencies around 750 works of art.

It was in 1948, when Rector of the UMU Manuel Batlle, when the first great incorporation of works took place, thanks to the donation of eight pictures of the XVIIth century and one of the XVIIIth.

The Marquis, one of the greatest art collectors in the country, had donated 30 years before to the Prado Museum as many works from the same period.

The majority of these donated first works belong to the schools of Valencia and Toledo, centers with great artistic potential at that time.

The works of the XVII belong to John of the Court (Martyrdom of Saint Catherine, Fire of Troy, The Circumcision of Jesus): Hendrich Van Somer (Saint Jerome);

Esteban March (Battle between Crusaders and Turks), Jerónimo Jacinto de Espinosa (Intersection of San Pedro Nolasco by his monks);

Vicente Giner (Daniel in the lion's den), and Senén Vila (Martyrdom of San Pedro Armengol), this author of the Murcia school.

Since the building of the old convalescence building as the headquarters of the Rector's Office, in 1987, the building houses all these works, some have recently been deposited in the Restoration Center for their repair-, as well as many others from later times, with which we can affirm that the Rectorate of the University of Murcia is today an authentic museum.

A museum that in a few days will incorporate this magnificent canvas so that it can be admired by all Murcia.
