Change Murcia regrets the absence of recognition of the City Council to the reprisals of the Franco regime in the Old Prison (03/09/2018)

The spokesman of the municipal group of Cambiemos Murcia, Nacho Tornel, today showed his "disappointment" because neither the mayor, José Ballesta, nor any other member of the government team, referred yesterday, in the concert organized by the City Council in Old Prison, to the memory of the people imprisoned and executed there for defending democratic values during the Franco regime.

For Tornel, the celebration of this act, the first to welcome the oldprison since its closure in the early 80s, was an "ideal moment" for the municipal government to "launch a message in favor of peace and freedom for precisely those who pleaded the hundreds of murcianos prisoners, many of them shot, within those walls ".

"In all the events in which he participates, Ballesta dedicates his interventions to highlight the values, roots and traditions of the people of Murcia, but on this occasion he has once again obviated any reference to the historical memory of the reprisals as a value of the future and of hope. "so that the Prison and the memory of these people become" a project of freedom ".

The councilor has also branded as "shocking" that the alderman always speaks of "Murcian DNA" in reference to the values of citizens, their traditions and even ask to overcome "a certain inferiority complex", and at the same time be "unable "to value and recognize" that other DNA "that represents those who were reprimanded for defending" a democratic constitutional system like the one that existed at the time of the fascist coup d'état ".

Tornel attended the concert yesterday with members of Cambiemos Murcia and found the "great interest" of the public by the prison, hence it is "incomprehensible" the silence of municipal officials in an "ideal scenario" to claim postulates of tolerance, peace and respect, and in favor of freedom.

The mayor has once again insisted on the proposal that led to the June plenary session last year so that the building is open to the public through planned itineraries and under strict security measures.

In his opinion, it is a proposal "feasible" and "a milestone for the municipality" that would serve to bring this historic space closer to the citizens.

For municipal training, the remodeling project of the Old Prison "can not in any way eliminate the meaning of this space, nor sweeten the testimony of those who suffered tortures there paying for their ideas, even with life."
