Archaeological excavations bring to light the recreational estate of King Lobo in Monteagudo (27/08/2018)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, along with the councilor of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and the mayor of Pedanías, Participation and Decentralization, Marco Antonio Fernández, have visited today the archaeological excavations that are being developed in the foothills of the Castillejo de Monteagudo, and they are bringing to light the 'almunia' or recreational estate enjoyed by King Lobo, Ibn Mardanish, in the Murcia of the twelfth century.

The excavation is allowing to recover the gardens, pools and ditches and structures of the estate that King Wolf enjoyed in the XII century, one of the periods of greatest splendor of Murcia, in which the city was one of the most powerful capitals of the West .

The works, which began on August 20 and will continue over the next two months, are being coordinated by the director of the School of Arab Studies of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), Julio Navarro Palazón, and affect to an area of ​​about 3 hectares (about three football fields).

The recreational farm consisted, in addition to orchards and crops, of a pond or artificial lagoon that served to provide water for irrigation and as a recreational place for boats, according to the researchers, who are currently trying to locate the pier.

Valuable information about the origin of the Huerta de Murcia

In addition to the valuable information that the excavation is throwing - the analysis of this hydraulic system can provide interesting data on the formation of the Huerta de Murcia -, the objective is to consolidate and restore the remains to make this environment and that is constituted in a heritage resource of the city of Murcia.

King Lobo, one of the most outstanding figures of the peninsular political scene of the 12th century, ordered the construction of his 'almunia' (Palatine estate of the elite) on the slope of Castillejo, his fortified palace of retreat.

Ibn Mardanish had his permanent residence set up in the Alcazar Seguir (now the Convent of Santa Clara).

The intervention is taking place on a private plot, adjacent to the Camino de la Almazara and the Senda de Granada, with the authorization of their owners, and is carried out with financial support from the City of Murcia and the Municipal Board of Monteagudo .

Participate a dozen people between specialists of the School of Arab Studies and graduate students and Master's studies of the Universities of Murcia and Granada.

This project is part of the scientific activities of the study 'The Almunias of the Islamic West: architecture, archeology and documentary sources', whose main researcher is Dr. Julio Navarro Palazón (EEA-CSIC), and co-financed by the State Development Program of the Scientific and Technical Research of Excellence of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, and FEDER funds.
