The eco-park received last year 442,000 kilos of small appliances, mobiles, monitors and clothing deposited by Murcians (21/08/2018)

This unique waste can be delivered in these facilities or in the 6 mobile ecopoints that run through the neighborhoods and districts.

The neighbors of San Pedro and Santa Catalina have stood out as those who most use this service.

The waste is finally transferred to the treatment centers, where they undergo processes for their reduction, reuse, recycling, disposal and recovery with advanced technology.

52,000 liters of oil, 148,421 kilos of electrical waste, 6,344 kilos of hazardous waste and 13,495 kilos of clothing are some of the waste deposited by Murcia in the eco-park and mobile ecopoints last year.

In total, they received 441,888 kilos of special waste, which represents an increase of 28% compared to 2015, when 345,000 kilos were registered.

These facilities, owned by the City of Murcia and managed by Ferrovial Services, are prepared to manage the collection of equipment, computer devices, lamps, x-rays, batteries and all objects that can not be thrown in containers installed in the streets, and either by its components or by its size, and require specific management to ensure the protection of the environment.

Data for the last three years indicate that the largest increase in waste deposited by Murcia has occurred in toner -75% - mobile -48% -, clothing and oils -30% -, while, on the contrary, there is a reduction in radiographs -motivated by its progressive substitution by digital format- and fluorescent tubes -also less used-.

Almost 5,000 mobile phones and 38,500 cowboys

These figures mean that Murcia deposited by this conduit more than 50,000 kilos of monitors, which is equivalent to 10,155 units;

733 kilos of mobile phones, that is, 4,890 terminals;

and almost 13,500 kilos of any type of clothes, which supposes, as an example, approximately 38,500 cowboys.

Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, has offered the balance of these special waste accompanied by the head of street cleaning service of the City of Murcia, Miguel Cano, responsible for Ferrovial Services in Murcia, Antonio Igualada, and the person in charge of the mobile ecopunto.

Perez explains that this waste is destined for the eco-park, located in the West Industrial Estate, which is not a landfill or a waste warehouse, but an integral facility where once classified they are transferred to their corresponding management companies, where they will be decontaminated, reused, recycled or energetically valued, correctly, according to their nature and composition, through an appropriate environmental treatment.

Everything on the web and the App

In this way, the waste obtained in the 6 mobile ecopoints -which weekly visit all the neighborhoods and districts- are transferred daily to this facility to follow the indicated process.

'Not having time or means of transport is no longer an excuse for not acting correctly, since it is the eco-park that approaches each neighborhood and district,' says Pérez, who recalls that all the information regarding the calendar and schedule of the ecopoints can be obtained on the website murciaciudadsostenible.es and in the retorecicla App.

The average number of visits per month during the first seven months of 2017 was 8,363, compared to 10,839 in the same period of 2018, which represents an increase of 29.6%.

As a curiosity, residents of the districts of San Pedro and Santa Catalina have stood out as those who most use these vehicles to deposit their waste, with an average of 1,332 and 1,165 visits per thousand inhabitants, respectively.

These data indicate that there is increasing public awareness and that Murcia take advantage of the ease of their location in central and transit locations.

In addition, it is a totally free service that runs from Monday to Saturday throughout the year, except in August, which schedules are more restricted, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
