The City Council and ANSE plant 2,800 trees in La Contraparada and remove more than 2,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere (14/08/2018)

The Consistory and ANSE receive the Emissions Compensation Certificate, granted by the General Directorate of the Natural Environment, for this reforestation carried out together with the Ecological Association of the Southeast.

White poplars, willows, ash and elms fill with life the riverside forest of this river corridor, benefiting the ecosystem of the environment and helping to reduce the temperature of the Segura waters.

The City of Murcia, in collaboration with the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE), has carried out the planting of more than 2,800 trees of 30 different native spices in the environment of the Contraparada, which has led to the withdrawal of more than 2,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today received the 'RSCO2 Certificate' for the compensation of emissions, granted by the regional government, through the general director of Medio Medio, Consuelo Rosauro;

a distinction that recognizes the recovery of the riparian forest of the river corridor of the Contraparada, carried out by the City Council and ANSE.

The event was attended by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Garden, Antonio Navarro, and the biologist of the environmental association, Jorge Sanchez.

"This reforestation is part of the Plan of Action of the Huerta de Murcia, which has as one of its priority environmental objectives the recovery of the biodiversity of the Segura river and its surroundings", explained José Ballesta, who appreciated "the work developed by ANSE as a collaborating partner in this initiative with high ecological, social and landscape profitability ".

The recovery of the Contraparada river corridor represents a saving in the atmosphere of 2,000 tons of CO2, which would be equivalent to the average emission made by 1,500 vehicles during a whole year or a distance equivalent to 15 million km.

In addition, it provides numerous benefits to the ecosystem of the Contraparada and the environment of Segura, such as purification of river waters, reduction of water temperature, maintenance of pollinator populations, control of floods and invasive alien species. as the cane, among other advantages.

The plantation has been carried out guaranteeing the safety of the channeling, with the supervision and authorization by the Water Commission of the CHS.

Poplars, willows and ash

Among the different native tree species that have been planted and maintained five years ago, include white poplars, willows, ash trees, elms, almeces, baladres and chaste trees.

In total, more than 30 different autochthonous species have been used in the plantations.

Also, as the channeling had large, very dry slopes, it was necessary to resort to forest species to revegetate these areas, as in the case of mastic trees or black hawthorns, among others.

More trees, more shade, more life: 10,000 new copies

In addition to the 2,800 trees of the Contraparada, the City Council, through the Department of Modernization of the Administration and Urban Development, has planted in the last three years more than 5,000 copies in parks and gardens of the city and districts, a figure that it adds to the 500 that have been replaced in forested environments.

To them we must add the new 1,800 trees that this winter will begin to be planted on the 8.5 km Greenway that will run through the districts of the South Mountain Range of Murcia, a natural path that will be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists alike.
