Zootherapy for 50 children participating in the Adaptation Summer School of Terra Natura (08/08/2018)

Zootherapy is done with sea lions, dogs, lemurs, giraffes, raptors or fallow deer.

These therapies are taught by therapists and the objectives are physiotherapeutic, psycho-social and logopedic, among others.

They are aimed at students with disabilities, between 5 and 20 years.

The Councilor for Modernization of Administration and Urban Development, José Guillén and the Councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, accompanied by the director of Terra Natura Murcia, Gustavo Martínez, visited the Adapted Summer School of Terra Natura and the City Council of Murcia.

These activities involve 50 children with disabilities who have the opportunity to practice zootherapy with sea lions and other animals such as dogs, lemurs, giraffes, raptors or deer.

The assisted therapy with sea lions is an intervention where a multidisciplinary team of therapists plan and execute a series of exercises with physiotherapeutic, pisco-social and logopédicos objectives, in order to enhance the capabilities of the users through interaction with the lion marine and with the aquatic environment.

It lasts 75 minutes, and specifically works to improve self-esteem and mood, sensory stimulation, psychomotor skills, as well as individual and group values.

"From the City of Murcia we put all the necessary means so that Terra Natura becomes every summer an ideal scenario to develop this type of activities, not only for being a natural space, but also because it is fully adapted to the needs of children It is another leisure option available for all Murcians who spend the summer in the city and for all tourists who visit us "José Guillén reported.

The Adapted Summer School began the first week of July and ends this week.

In total, 50 students participated in ages between 5 years and 20 years.

Of these, six children have had the opportunity to attend scholarships by the City of Murcia and the Centauro Chiron Foundation.

"The Adapted Summer School project is aimed at all those people who, with some physical, mental, sensory pathology, with language disorders, developmental disorders, mental illness or with problems of social integration, our goal is that these people they have all the means to carry out an integral treatment that facilitates their development, year after year we see that contact with other people and animals enhances their skills ", added Conchita Ruiz.
