A doctoral thesis of the University of Murcia entitled 'Knowledge and attitudes of health professionals in Emergencies and Emergencies on gender violence' has highlighted that, although more than 85% of these professionals have experience in the care of this type of victims, more than 20% do not know the existence of the specific protocol of action in case of attending to a woman, either in the emergency services or at home.
The research work carried out by the nurse Blas Ignacio de Gea Guillén indicates, furthermore, that even knowing this protocol and having had the opportunity to apply it, almost a quarter of these health professionals had not used it.
One of the objectives of the doctoral thesis, which has obtained the qualification of outstanding cum laude, has been to know the demand and interest of these professionals in receiving specific training in gender violence.
More than three quarters of these health workers say they have a greater need for specific training in this area;
however, more than 42% have no interest in training.
This study opens new avenues of investigation to try to know what are the causes of the non-application of the protocol by the medicine and nursing professionals of Emergency and Emergencies.
Its author considers it necessary to review the current protocols, adapting them to these services and trying to strengthen teaching strategies to train and inform their professionals, both at the beginning of the employment relationship and throughout their professional development.
The doctoral thesis was directed by Matilde Campos Aranda, professor of the Faculty of Medicine and María José López Montesinos, professor of the Faculty of Nursing.
