The Day Center of the Jesus Abandoned Foundation serves 65 people during the month of July in Murcia (07/08/2018)

The Day Center of the Abandoned Jesus Foundation serves 65 people during the month of July in Murcia, "offering a decent and restful space to the homeless and most vulnerable who are in a situation of exclusion," says May Penín, responsible for the social area of the entity.

This resource, "the only center of its kind in the city of Murcia", is open in July and August from nine in the morning to seven in the afternoon in an uninterrupted manner, "and provides shelter from the extreme heat of the summer months", that reach in many occasions the 45 degrees of temperature.

As May Penín explains, "it is true that in situations of great heat such as in summer or very cold in winter, our activity becomes more evident, which we develop 365 days a year thanks to our volunteers and professionals".

But he remarks that "the integral attention that we offer from the Fundación Jesús Abandonado to change the situation of the homeless or at risk of exclusion does not depend on whether it is August or December."

"It's a year-round job, fighting for real inclusion based on decent housing and employment," says the entity's professional.

Both this and the different resources of the Foundation such as the Training and Employment Center, the housing of the 'Housing First' program (the housing, the first) and the support floors, the social pension, the Welcome Center or Dining Room Social "maintain their activity throughout the year, including the summer months."

But the Abandoned Jesus Foundation "intensifies its activity in the hottest days", with the aim of counteracting the consequences of the continued exposure to them by people who are in a situation of being homeless.

This is the case of the Day Center, which has activities that promote and promote the acquisition of social skills, self-care, self-recognition, and serve to promote your own schedule of inclusion agreed with your reference social worker,

"There are also responsible leisure activities such as visits to museums, outings to the pool, tours of the city of Murcia to see and know the most significant places of it and where they can relate to society."

The Jesus Abandoned Foundation, open 365 days a year, develops its work in the Region of Murcia with the Hospitaller Order of San Juan de Dios (OHSJD).

It has 248 accommodation places, distributed in a Welcome Center, the 'Housing First' program, housing with support and a social pension, as well as a Social Dining Room that serves around 300 meals and 300 dinners a day.

Likewise, Jesus Abandoned has an area of employment and training with programs for labor insertion, with the intention of developing initiatives and interventions that can facilitate the access of the homeless to a paid work activity.
