Now Murcia denounces the lack of social workers in the health centers of the municipality (06/08/2018)

Alzamora states that "there are no social workers in all the health centers of the municipality, and the few professionals available have very few hours of care because they have to be moving between the different neighborhoods and districts"

The councilor highlights the need for these professionals in a municipality "with high and rising rates of poverty and child poverty"

NOW MURCIA denounces the lack of social workers in the health centers of the municipality, which causes "a lack of attention that is especially serious in the most vulnerable areas, which have high and increasing rates of poverty and child poverty."

Councilman Miguel Angel Alzamora states that "there are no social workers in all the health centers of the municipality, and the few professionals available have very few hours of care because they have to be moving between the different neighborhoods and districts."

Thus, this situation is occurring in the health centers of vulnerable areas of the city such as Vistabella (which includes the neighborhoods of La Paz and La Fama), San Andrés, Espinardo or San Juan, "along with those of almost all districts. "

Alzamora stresses that "poverty has linked health problems that must be worked not only from the health sector but also from a social point of view, which makes the figure of the social worker essential".

However, the deficit of these professionals in the health centers causes "that they can not carry out the necessary intervention processes, as well as the adequate follow-up and coordination required with other institutions, such as municipal social services."

"In a municipality," says the mayor, "in which all the reports (Unicef, EAPN, University of Murcia, IMAS ...) speak of very high numbers of people living in poverty and at risk of exclusion, as well as poverty child, it is essential to take into account that poverty is one of the most important determinants that affect health, so it is necessary to have a sufficient number of social workers, both in Social Services, which are still collapsed, and in the centers of health".

Alzamora stresses that the work of these professionals is also especially necessary "in the case of the elderly".

The councilor notes that "although social workers are part of the health system since its inception and they are the point of union between Health and the Social Services system, they have not been given the importance they deserve, suffering from staff deficit in our public health, a situation that Murcia now denounces that should be

solved in our municipality and approached conveniently by the Health Minister, increasing the number of social workers so that the attention demanded by users of different health centers, especially those in the most vulnerable areas, is given. "
