The revolutionary therapy that cures diabetic foot ulcer receives the support of the Murcia City Council (03/08/2018)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, has received Dr. Francisco José Nicolás, principal investigator of the biomedical group that is working in Murcia on a new and revolutionary therapy to treat diabetic foot ulcer, through the use of the amniotic membrane;

a team made up of specialists from the Murcian Institute for Biosanitary Research (IMIB) -Arrixaca, from the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Clinical Hospital and from the University of Murcia.

José Ballesta showed his support for "this research led by specialists Murcia and with a very high social value, which aims to accelerate research for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcer, which is the main cause of non-traumatic amputations, with a new and successful treatment that has been developed over the last four years and that now wants to be extended to as many patients as possible, reaching all public and private hospitals and health centers. "

Diabetic foot ulcer is a lesion that usually occurs in the sole of the foot in 15% of patients with diabetes.

Diabetes is the main cause of non-traumatic amputations of the lower extremities and approximately 15% of cases of diabetic patients who have developed this ulcer suffer an amputation.

Preliminary data obtained over the last years in the General Surgery Service, Wound and Diabetic Foot Unit of the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca (HCUVA) and the Unit of Cell Therapy and Hematopoietic Transplantation, in collaboration with the Murcian laboratory of Regeneration, Molecular Oncology TGF-BETA, indicate that the application of amniotic membrane (MA) on this type of lesions offers a successful alternative for the treatment of this type of lesions.

The amniotic membrane (MA) is a structure that surrounds the fetus throughout embryonic development.

It is endowed with cells with a therapeutic capacity that currently begins to be properly assessed after being used in various ailments.

This is a tissue that is discarded once the baby has been lighted, so it is easy and safe availability.

"With the crowdfounding campaign we want to accelerate research and reach as many patients as possible, with the aim of improving their quality, reducing the healthcare costs generated by the effects of these injuries and improving the healing quality of these ulcers so that they do not amputation is reached, "said Dr. Nicolás, who added that" with this campaign we want to make this problem visible and give citizens the opportunity to get involved in the progress of this therapy. "

In addition to the City of Murcia, many other groups are joining this crowdfunding campaign, with which you can contribute economically in the following link: https://www.precipita.es/proyecto/nueva-terapia-para-la- ulcer-of-foot-diabetic-membrane-amniotic.html
