Huerta Viva warns that the construction of new highways is incompatible with the conservation of the Huerta (02/08/2018)

The Ministry of the Presidency and Development has just announced a new version of the highway Bancal without addressing the numerous allegations of neighbors, associations and political groups calling for an alternative project to minimize the impact on the Huerta and people living in she.

The association Huerta Viva presented in February a series of allegations warning of the damages that can cause the tracings of the so-called highway of the Bancal, the AVE and the Reguerón highway whose first section is currently under construction.

For Huerta Viva the execution of these three major projects represent one of the greatest threats to the conservation of La Huerta, taking into account that the Reguerón highway will extend from Beniaján to Palmar creating a new barrier for the southern districts.

These works, as they are projected on the basis of projects of more than twenty years ago, are incompatible with the new conservation proposals of the huerta of Murcia as a historic agrarian territory of great value to ensure the quality of life in the municipality of Murcia , including food sovereignty and the fight against desertification and climate change.

In addition, these projects do not conform to the new environmental and landscape policies, such as the European Landscape Convention, the General Guidelines on Green Infrastructures or the Royal Decree of Floodplains, where the design of infrastructure parallel to waterways is prevented due to the danger that they suppose in case of torrential rains, being this the case of the highway of Reguerón.

On the other hand, they also contradict the safeguard of the Council of Good Men, in whose declaration as Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO warned that the construction of infrastructure was one of the greatest threats to destroy and distort the agricultural land to which This customary court of medieval origin is linked.

In the case of the Bancal highway, the Ministry of the Presidency and Development has not answered any allegation in this regard, limiting itself to publishing a version very similar to that presented in 2004 and with a new deadline to present allegations coinciding with the month of August.

For Huerta Viva and other groups, such as the Santomera Platform against the highway, there are alternatives of much lower social, environmental and economic impact, and that improve local communications to be much more porous road and do not act as a barrier.

In the case of the Bancal highway, a bypass to Santomera is proposed, to improve the roads in the area and create a fast divided highway taking advantage of the current roads MR303 and MR414.

This would prevent many expropriations and the disappearance of a large area of orchard.

For the Reguerón highway, its continuity from Beniaján by the projected Costera Sur, so that vials are not duplicated and the possibility of converting the Reguerón channel into a large greenway that connects all the districts of the south of the municipality is opened joined to the one that is going to be built in the old railway line.
