The Town Hall recovers the historic vaults of the Sala Caballerizas for the Murcian culture of the 21st century (02/08/2018)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, along with councilman Jesús Pacheco, visited this morning the repair and conservation works of the historic Caballerizas Hall, a unique example of civil architecture of the eighteenth century that is preserved in the city of Murcia.

"This historic property that we are recovering in the heart of the city will reopen to all Murcia after the summer, as Exhibition Hall and cultural space, recovering our heritage and integrating it with the artistic and cultural concerns of Murcia of the XXI century" explained José Ballesta.

The building, located next to the Hydraulic Museum of Los Molinos del Río, is a singular diaphanous space domed with sandstone walls.

The property has an area of 266 m2 and consists of six semi-spherical vaults supported by stone arches.

Its construction dates from the last quarter of the 18th century and is attributed to the master builder of the Tomás Moncalbo Town Hall.

The finalization of the works was executed by the master of works of the Murcian Council, Francisco Bolarín.

The project team has an archaeologist and a restaurateur who oversee the work that began last July and is scheduled to end in mid-September, with a total investment of 156,000 euros.

The integral action includes the repair of one of the arches whose fragments of stone had been detached and their reinforcement with steel rods, the insulation and waterproofing of the walls, the reconstruction of the sandstone stones of the interior pilasters, the elimination of the exterior graffiti and the integral restoration of the facade, among other works.
