The City Council undertakes the recovery and enhancement of the environment of the Wheel of the Ñora (26/07/2018)

Recover and value the Wheel of the Ñora and its historical environment is a purpose on which the City of Murcia works.

This morning an important step was taken, with the initial approval of the project to obtain the necessary land for the Plan of Intervention and Recovery of the Wheel through the expropriation system.

In particular, the file involves the acquisition of the land adjacent to the aqueduct and the free spaces located next to the access road to it.

According to the project, the land corresponds to a green area bounded by the General Plan on the right side of Rueda street, towards the Ferris wheel, and with part of the green area on the left margin, in front of it.

There are 7 affected plots, with a total area of 1,423 square meters, of which 511 are currently in public use, so it will only be necessary to expropriate the remaining 911 square meters.

This file is part of a more ambitious plan that is shaping the City Council with the participation of various councils, and whose ultimate goal is to recover this historical environment in which you can admire the channel that collects water from the wheel to distribute throughout the extension of the Murcian orchard.

In this sense, this same month of July the Governing Board approved another action also referred to this environment.

In this case, the agreement consisted of the management charge to Urbamusa for the drafting of the special plan for the management of the area surrounding the Noria and the La Ñora Aqueduct, which will affect a total area of 1.78 hectares.

This project aims to eliminate the distorting elements that disturb the contemplation or integrity of the monument.

In this way, the conservation conditions of the spaces next to the La Ñora Wheel, the Aljufia and Alfatego irrigation ditches and the La Rueda Mill will be defined and the criteria will be defined to improve the exterior appearance of the nearby homes in order to give uniformity to the whole.

La Rueda de la Ñora is assigned the grade 1 of integral protection so that the hydraulic ingenuity will be fully conserved, respecting the systems with which it was built, the restoration and conservation will be done respecting the original materials and a harmonious environment will be sought with the construction, providing an adequate visual field for contemplation.

The wheel of La Ñora, whose origins date back to the fifteenth century, was declared BIC in 1982 and is one of the symbols of the Huerta de Murcia.

It has a diameter of 10 meters and was built in 1936 replacing another older one built in wood and whose first copy known at documentary level dates from 1399. The aqueduct that accompanies the Ferris wheel has a length of about 220 meters, varying between 7 and 9 meters its height.
