The summer nights in Murcia are enjoyed from the tower of the Cathedral (26/07/2018)

In the Plaza de la Cruz, visits to the Cathedral tower begin.

From the outside, you can know and enjoy its structure, which shows the different architectural styles used in its construction.

The construction of the tower, which lasted three centuries, began in the early sixteenth century, in 1519, and was not completed until 1793, as there was a break of more than 200 years in which the work was not advanced at all.

The reason: that the structure began to tilt a bit and it seemed that it was coming down, so they decided to leave it as it was, until they resumed the works in the eighteenth century.

In the structure of the tower of the Cathedral of Murcia you can easily see the evolution of art within the same work.

We can see from the purest renaissance in Italy, to the Spanish Renaissance, passing through a baroque phase and the end that is neoclassical, specifically the dome and the auction, by the architect Ventura Rodríguez.

After this, the visitor goes through the only door that has access to the tower and begins to climb the access ramps, eighteen ramps in total.

During this climb the different rooms of the tower are known, whose use has evolved over the years according to the need of each moment, as in the case of the sacristy, the library and others that have been the refuge of priests. or of neighbors of the city, in moments of danger or floods.

We also find rooms that were places where delinquents in the area served sentences.

Another of these rooms, the one that most attracts the attention of visitors, is the house of the bell ringer, today known as the room of secrets.

In it there is a special acoustics, due to its vault, which allows the fact that two people can tell each other a secret, from one corner to another of the room, with people and noise, without anyone else, besides them, listening.

The visit to the tower of the Cathedral ends in the belfry or body of bells, where there are 20 of these, some of very large dimensions, the largest weighs 6.420 kilos.

All of them have a name, that of a saint, and formerly it was thought that where the sound of that bell came, the intercession of the saint also arrived.

In summer, the nocturnal visits contribute an extra when it comes to knowing the monument.

This vertical route, of the 95 meters of the tower, the second highest of the cathedrals of Spain, ends with the last bell of the day, enjoying the views of the city and the Murcian summer nights.

Throughout the year you can enjoy the tower of the Cathedral of Murcia, on guided tours at 10:00, 12:00 and 16:00.

During the months of July, August and September, the afternoon visits are suppressed and the night visits are added, which take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 22:00 hours.

To be able to go to these visits it is necessary to reserve previously, calling to 968 21 97 13 or going to the Museum of the Cathedral.
